Hi,

The mach number for this aircraft is fine----speed is just for show----. Most of the cruising and strike missions are below mach 1.

With speed---you don't get maneuverability----. The JF 17 is an excellent design for an aircraft this size---.

Speed means a lot if backed by sufficient fuel capacity(perfect examples being SU-35 & Pak FA). & by the way detection range of 75km for 5sm RCS objects is not going to help with the "fast missiles" thing. JF-17 even in it's block 2 is just a "filler" to fill the gap of retiring air crafts.(while keeping in mind the requirements of a country like Pakistan whose very existence is under threat by many ways)

Higher speed---does not bring much to this above average aircrafts. The F 17 is not a filler aircraft---. You can compare a small aircraft of nowadays to what was the AK 47 in the 70's---as the AK 47 brought equality amongst two fighting groups---the smaller fighter aircraft of nowadays have the same effect---they are extremely potent and deadly.

They have highly sophisticated electronic warfare / weapons packages not seen in the past---even though they cannot carry a large number of Bvr missiles as the heavier enemy aircraft can---but they can carry missiles similar in size and cability and ability---and they can still launch extremely deadly Bvr missiles from the same distance as the opponent can---with an extremely high kill ratios---and then you are looking at Off bore sight missiles in this aircraft in the coming 3-4 years.

High top end speed is just one of the factors----and not THE factor in aircraft design and function. It depends on your needs---desires---but the ultimate factor is how much money you have to invest in it---andeven if you have the money to invest---where are you going to get the power plant from. Then you have to look at other issues as well---can your ar craft structure handle the higher speeds!!!

Speed is not everything----the technology has evolved so much that it is said----if you can put a capable engine on a brick---make it fly and load it up with the most modern missiles and electronics package---you can literally take out the best of the enemy aircraft out.

The JF 17 is built for the local arena---it is designed to give the forces some breathing room with an extremely potent weapons package.

i totally agree.... But i think a T/W ratio of more than 1 should be thought about.. Because then u have a deadly dog fighter added to the whole weapons package..like the F-16 MLU is....So powe rplant is an issue but not for speed but for T/W ratio..

How did the Phantoms and the F 14's made it with their weak engines----. This power plant is not going to change for awhile----maybe general upgrades from the factory and that is all.

Phantom was one of the worst dog fighters of its age....F-14 was an aircraft of the 1980s...Well our JFT is gonna have to compete with fighters of a T/W ratio of the class of 1:1.2+ almost in many cases...so we better look at it as a shortcoming..and not blind ourselves by looking at decades old concepts the failure of which led to the Energy Maneuvrability theory...based on which the Light fighter concept was born..and led to F-16,F-18 and subsequently JFT.

Phantom was one of the worst dog fighters of its age....F-14 was an aircraft of the 1980s...Well our JFT is gonna have to compete with fighters of a T/W ratio of the class of 1:1.2+ almost in many cases...so we better look at it as a shortcoming..and not blind ourselves by looking at decades old concepts the failure of which led to the Energy Maneuvrability theory...based on which the Light fighter concept was born..and led to F-16,F-18 and subsequently JFT.
