JF-17, not F-16, used in air combat: report

Ummm.... OK... That raises more questions than answers:wacko:
May I ask why would Mongolia, a landlocked country, have a Navy?
haha, brother, that's very obvious. Indians are lying.

Yes, Mongolia has a navy.

Yes, Mongolia has a navy.
Is it a blue water navy, green water navy or a chlorine water navy?

As for your question the MiG-21 is still relevant in a Indo-Pak war. Pakistan too is flying F-7s isn't she?

JF-17, not F-16, used in air combat: report

WASHINGTON: Apparently, it was a JF-17 fighter jet that brought down an Indian warplane in Azad Jammu and Kashmir last week, says a CNN report as an American diplomat said Washington wanted to know if Pakistan used a US-built F-16 jet to shoot the plane.

The JF-17 is a Chinese-designed fighter jet produced jointly by Pakistan and China.

“It may have been one of those jets that on Wednesday downed an Indian Air Force fighter plane, leading to the capture by Pakistan of an Indian pilot” Abhinandan Varthaman, said the CNN report released this weekend. The report also noted that the Indian jet was a MiG-21, a Soviet-designed aircraft, which has been in service since the 1960s. The MiG-21 “forms the backbone” of the Indian Air Force, which has about 200 of those in its inventory.

Nishank Motwani, a visiting fellow at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, Acton, Australia, told CNN that Indian pilots called the plane “a flying coffin” because it had been involved in multiple accidents.

“And that illustrates a problem for India. While it has a massive military budget, a significant chunk of that goes toward maintenance of existing equipment, and salaries,” the report added.

The report included a quote from a recent inquiry by an Indian parliament committee, saying: “Modernisation gets a mere 14 per cent (of allocated funds), which is grossly inadequate.”

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Islamabad told the Reuters news agency on Sunday that the United States was “seeking information” on whether Pakistan used US-built F-16 jets to down the Indian warplane, which may violate the F-16 sale agreements between Washington and Islamabad.

Pakistan said it did not use F-16s in shooting down the Indian fighter jet when it crossed the Line of Control. Islamabad also said that this was an act of self-defence.

“We are aware of these reports and are seeking more information,” the US Embassy spokesperson said. “We take all allegations of misuse of defence articles very seriously.”

The US often inserts restrictions on how its exported military hardware can be used through so-called end-user agreements.

India claimed that AIM-120C-5 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile had been fired recently, showing that F-16 Viper fighter jets were “at least involved” in recent strikes in the region. Pakistan rejected the Indian claim as completely baseless. India also claimed that it shot down one of the Vipers.

Pakistan rejected this claim as well, saying that since it had not used any F-16 jets, the question of one being shot down did not arise.

PAF’s JF-17 may have shot down Indian MiG-21: CNN report

WASHINGTON: A CNN report has now stated that Pakistan may have used Chinese-designed JF-17 in aerial combat with Indian Air Force last week that downed a Soviet-era MiG-21, leading to the capture of an Indian pilot.

India claimed that it shot down an F-16 fighter jet, which New Delhi said crashed inside Azad Kashmir, and used pictures of MiG-21 released by Pakistan to justify its claims.

Islamabad, on the other hand, rejected the claims that it lost any aircraft.

On the contrary, the United States is seeking information on whether Pakistan used US-built jets against India, which may violate the F-16 sale agreements between Washington and Pakistan.

“We are aware of these reports and are seeking more information,” a US Embassy spokesperson told a foreign news agency. “We take all allegations of misuse of defence articles very seriously.”

Nishank Motwani, a visiting fellow at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy with expertise on India and Pakistan, told CNN that China plays a vital role in sub-continent military buildup.

The report added that while India lacks military industrial base, Pakistan is making its own JF-17 fighter jets with Chinese assistance.

Motwani said Indian pilots call the MiG-21 "the flying coffin" for the accidents it has been involved in. It has been in service since the 1960s, and the Indian Air Force still says it "forms the backbone" of its fleet with about 200 in inventory.

Another report in Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post suggests that JF-17 was used in the combat.

The report stated that within hours after the tweet of a former PAF officer that JF-17 shot down two Indian aircraft, the shares in Shenzhen-listed Sichuan Chengfei Integration Technology, a sister company of JF-17 maker Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, rose 10 per cent.

Always provide source with proper headlines in start of Post. Furthermore, avoid duplicate threads.

This is one of the key points. There are also rumours & reports about 10 countries enquiring about JF-17.

For example: My father is the commander of the Mongolian Navy. We have a gunboat and a fishing boat. My father asked me to drive a fishing boat to fight. is this reasonable?

Same. India has SU-30 and MiG-21. and according to Indian news, he's a very good pilot. but his father let him drive MiG 21 to fight... Logical contradiction.

From Wikipedia: "the Mongolian Navy has a single vessel with a strength of seven men, including one who can swim."
I can't tell the reason, but they indeed have a navy.

Why India is insisting the Mig-21 was down by F-16?

Down by F-16 is lot of sexier or more glamorous than down by JF-17?

I think the practical consideration is that both the JF-17 and LCA have entered the light-weight fighter tender by Malaysia. If JF-17 is battle proven then it has a higher chance of winning the tender since it is already less expensive.

I still remember the joke. LAC Tejas vs J-20.
In short, Tejas win...

Yes Colonel it did. By staying in its production hanger. Going through troubleshooting for 1000000000000000000000 times.
PS: Please don't ask me the value of the zeros above. :pakistan::crazy_pilot:

It is stationed on a lake that marks the border between Mongolia and Russia.

Try to defend against the threat of Mosquito strike!!!

Ofcourse F16 is a proven craft and its much easier for Indians to swallow being beaten by an American made product. India would want to take away any credit for JF17. Imagine the hurt and shame they have experienced and then multiply by a factor of 10 once it gets out that a china/Pak made craft gave it to them. The larger consideration is to stop JF17 becoming a commercial success at any cost. That would hurt more than a 10 migs being lost.
