China and Pakistan agree on Super-7 fighter development work

China and Pakistan agree on Super-7 fighter development work

14 Jul 1999

China and Pakistan have signed an agreement on the joint development and production of the Chengdu FC-1/Super 7 fighter, firming up a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed two years ago.

According to Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group (CAC), the agreement was signed at the end of June during a visit to Beijing by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It was co-signed by Chinese premier Zhu Rongji. The details of the contract are not being released. CAC says the workshare packages remain to be worked out.

The aircraft is to fly in 2001 and should be in service by 2005, says CAC. It is being developed in a 50-50 partnership between the two countries, to meet a Pakistani light fighter requirement believed to number 150 aircraft. Agreement was delayed by Pakistan's financial difficulties. Pakistan also made it a pre-condition that the Chinese air force commit to the aircraft.

Avionics may be supplied by either Fiar or Thomson-CSF, after Marconi Electronic Systems, which had been pushing to enter the programme, failed to submit a tender (Flight International, 7-13 July). The winner will have to share development costs with China and Pakistan, recouping its expenditure from the production phase.

Fiar has proposed an avionics and sensor suite based around the Grifo S7 radar being developed for the Super 7, while Thomson-CSF is proposing a system built around the RC400 radar.

Now people daily has made a mistake. Everyone is making a mistake and JF-17 fanboys are correct.

Chengdu J-7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Super-7 did away with British upgrades to the F-7M in the mid-1980s. After a successful deal with Chinese in the early 1980s resulting in the F-7M, the United Kingdom offered a further upgrade to improve the performance of the F-7M by adopting either General Electric F404 or Pratt & Whitney PW 1120 turbofan engines. The radar options would include the Red Fox, a repackaged version of the Blue Fox radar used on Sea Harrier FRS Mk 1, or the Emerson AN/APG-69. Although radar tests were successful, the upgrade was rejected before any engine tests, because a single radar or a single engine had cost more than a new J-7 (2 million United States Dollars, 1984 price). The name, Super-7, however, was retained to be used for the FC-1 / JF-17 light-weight fighter.

Super-7 Fighter Jet to Make Test Flight

China's Super-7 new-generation fighter aircraft is expected to make its maiden test flight later this year, a senior engineer with the China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I) said yesterday in Beijing.

A prototype of the "all-weather, multipurpose fighter jet" has just been completed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group, a branch of the Beijing-based AVIC I in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, said Gao Zhicong.

Gao, who is in charge of the project, said the new model represents China's most sophisticated light fighter for the 21st-century combat environment.

China independently designed and built the fighter, Gao said.

The single-seat, turbofan engine-powered fighter will go into volume production once tests have been successfully carried out, he said.

"The Super-7 aims to gradually replace the F-7, MiG-21 and Q-5 series aircraft that are currently in service in both China and some developing countries," he told China Daily in an exclusive interview.

A model of the military aircraft, which is also codenamed the Super-7/FC-1, debuted at an air show in Zhuhai in South China's Guangdong Province last year. It attracted keen interest from many visitors, according to Luo Ronghuai, president of the Chengdu aircraft manufacturer.

Both Luo and Gao declined to specify either the potential importing nations or the price.

Compared with the F-7, Q-5 and other fighter aircraft series currently in use in China, the Super-7 features a larger weapon-load capacity and a greater radar-detection range and it is stealth-capable, Gao said.

Its maximum external storage weight is 3.8 tons, and it boasts a radar-detection range of up to 100 kilometers, compared with the current jets' 30 kilometers, he said.

"The Super-7 is capable of carrying out the dual mission of air-to-air and air-to-surface attacks," Gao said.

The cost-effective aircraft can be used as a fighter or a trainer, he said.

Super-7 Fighter Jet to Make Test Flight

The Super 7 name was retained , the previous project ( Sabre II or Super 7 ) was cancelled ... What is tripping you ? :azn:

You are posting from wikipedia? You are worried about pics being photoshopped, but You are posting from WIKIPEDIA??

What a glaring bias!

Be happy with MiG-21's grandson. PAF is only good enough for that.

I love JF-17. It is the circus clown among the fighters. You never get bored while discussing JF-17. Very entertaining jet.

WTF is with Bharatis nowadays. They don't even know the simplest of the stuff about defense and particularly Pakistani military and have thousands of posts on this forum.

Just two days ago a bharati was saying Pakistan has no terrain hugging missile.
Yesterday we were teaching them simple stuff about rockets and Pakistani artillery
And now this. Kia jhak martai hain yeh yahan par. Even kids know about this. Facepalm.

The daily reports from 2003 from the news you have posted when the first JFT prototype made its flight , I was initially confused with the name " Super 7 " since it was never produced and the project was cancelled even Pakistan left the project in '89 , I didn't know the Chinese retained the name " Super 7 " for the FC-1 too hence you see it on the initial reports ... The name isn't used now ... Both FC-1/JF-17 and Project Sabre II / Super 7 were completely different ...

I don't know about the authenticity of the image, but the Pakistan flag is painted wrong.

That project whose name was Sabre/Super 7 was cancelled. Enough said. And was different from FC1/JFT.

Do you now need spoon feeding ? :azn: ... Haven't I posted enough stuff to prove that the project was cancelled after the Western contractors backed out and sanctions were applied to both Pakistan and China ?
