Not many countries can make fighter jet engine. Only Germany, Britain, France, China, Russia, the US can. Heck, not even Japan, South Korea, Sweden, India can.

Japan wasn't able to build jet engine in WW2 when Britain and Germany both did. It seems Japan lacks the tech to do so.

Japan doesn't lack in tech it's probably the U.S not letting them get one , jet engines are difficult to build specifically cause of the blades material

China makes its own engines. J-10C and J-16 for example are powered by WS-10A/B which are better than AL-31FN due to advanced FADEC and more power.
