Following the recent earthquake/tsunami crisis in nearby friendly nation Japan I was wondering if the GoI had any plans to assist Japan in its time of need such as sending SAR teams, the NDRF always has one battelion on standby for rapid deployment anywhere in the country and is fully trained and well equiped to handle SAR situations that are being conducted as of now. Lifting of nessercary materials by IAF such as temporary constructions/blankets/generators etc IN could help with the hydrographic measuring caused by earthquake using their extensive fleet of such craft, although not an immediate nessercary it is important eventually. And I'm sure there is much more India could do for the Japanease people.

I would say it was a very good show of solidarity following increasingly warm reletions between the two nations and Japan is in India's AOI and a close friendly nation. It is in times of crisis you find out who your true friends really are.

Buddy Japanese civil defence is one of the finest in the world. They do not need our help as of now at least.Furthermore there are huge US bases nearby in Okinawa islands etc. They really do not need our help right now.

True but there is NO country in the world prepared for devestation on the scale of this, literally WHOLE trains full of people have been lost. And I am not doubting the capability of the JSDF but only saying they could be assisted as they as yet must be pretty overwhelmed. Also SAR teams from US have already been sent and UK and Australian teams are on standby so why can't India follow suit and take a responsable role in the world convergent with its rising power/status?

Well India will send a team only if requested.I read this morning that both China and Russia have also kept their teams ready in case the need arises.Like i said before there os no need of an Indian contingent there at the moment.let's see what happens in the next couple of days.

Japan needs any help they can get, but at the right time! At the moment that have to find a way to organise their forces and check what's the most important issue. It's not only the earthquake, but the tsunami and now even a nuclear disaster!
India and Indian forces must be prepared to help when requsted, there should be no doubt about that, till then all we can do is this:

A very devastating disaster...Looks like Media is not reporting the real no. of casualties..

.
RIP to those who died in this disaster. I really hope that the government does something concrete here. We provided relief in the 2004 Tsunami and this is another opportunity to work for the sake of humanity.

The problem is, that they hardly can give real numbers at this early stage. Here in Germany the media reports of 1800 official casualties, but that's just an early guessing. There are some costal cities where several 10 000s are missing and nobody knows what happens to them and it will take days, or even weeks till they get any reliable figures. To top it all the nuclear accident is getting worse and worse and a 2nd Chernobyl is more than likely now!

I think GoI should take this accident into consideration, when they build all the new nuclear reactors in India. Of course they are needed, but also means a high risk!

Actual number will take time...right now nobody can tell you the casuality number.

Japan has NOW asked for international help, UK and Russian teams are on the way, US team just back from NZ 2 days ago already landed. I hope but doubt GoI will send them, once again it is purely down to LACK OF POLITICAL WILL and NOT operators skill, same with GoI response in Libya and Somalia (not doing enough to secure Indian citizens safety). Always reactionary and down to the last possible moment when there is no other option, never use foresight.

Come on India/GoI has to start taking its role in the world security.

I didn't particularly get what you're saying. But I'd like to request all th Indian members to not stoop to his level with the 'failed copied russian planes' and stuff.

We are discussing a tragedy here, and please avoid replying to such Idiots , we need to offer our prayers for our japanese brothers instead of replying to those who hate them and aswel us... There purpose is served by that, but ours is destroyed...

India sending first relief plane with blankets to Japan

Ready to extend all possible help immediately to Japan, reeling under the devastation caused by the massive earthquake and Tsunami, India is sending first plane-load of blankets today.

"India sending wool good quality blankets for the people of Sendai and others affected by Japan quake. 1st plane load being readied," Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao tweeted.

"Discussed this with Jap (Japanese) Amb (Ambassador) in Delhi and we felt this was most useful and needed item given cold weather conditions in affected areas," she said.

MEA officials also said that governments of Haryana and Punjab are also helping in procuring large quantity of woollen blankets as the weather is very cold there.

Rao is in constant touch with Indian embassy officials and also Japanese officials here regarding their requirements.

"All possible help will be extended immediately," they said.

Japan was hit by one of the worst-ever earthquake causing giant Tsunami waves on Friday and according to some news-media estimates, the death toll ranged between 1,300 and 1,700, and could rise sharply. In the port town of Minamisanriku, nearly 10,000 people were unaccounted for, according to the public broadcaster NHK.
