Probably, but my point is a people do not start great empires by being cowards..And yes The Japs were soundly kicked up the backside in Burma. I just hate these throw away lines which state that a certain people are cowards based on one incident. We lost plenty of battles over the centuries as well as winning a few

It is possible that the Britis of the 18th and 19th century , i.e. those who built the empire were not cowards and quite the opposite but what the member means is that the British of the World War period were cowards. I don't know.

The British of today do seem like cowards to me unlike their ancestors especially with the completely pu$$ified way in which they are tackling the Islamic exrtemism problem there.

Yes. Our ethos was 'Lets play cricket, old chap' thinking that the 'laws ' of war would be obeyed, such as surrendering was Ok when the Japanese would rather die than be taken prisoner. Plus a rather racist intelligence report on the Japanese soldiers fighting ability at the time reported that they were 'Undernourished, undersized, and myopic,' and did not make good soldiers..In fact the British were so complacent about this and underestimated the enemy they got a big shock . However , by the Burma campaign the British (and allies) learned how to tackle this blind fanatical fighting spirit and defeat the enemy. We also were fighting on a divided front at the time.. defending British cities from German raids and possible invasion. We needed all our good materiel in that theatre.

Well I would not know about that. I like these boards but I am dismayed that 'defence' is often not talked about but predudice against a people based on history keeps rearing its ugly head in every thread. because I am British I am regularly insulted because of it. People should just stick to the subject. If you do not want us here why allow us to join?
