Japanese Companies See Pakistan Having Better Prospects Than India

The building of metro, mono rail systems in several cities now is due to the help of the Japanese starting with the Delhi Metro. They've expanded several fold since then with their hands in HSR, Industrial corridors, smart city programs, among several others, including business in nuclear and defence. What are they doing in Pakistan?

No wonder Japan's FDI in India is 28 times higher than in Pakistan.

Ok here are my points or my 2 cents.. Its a bit big and since its a topic of economic interest, i can very well give and justify few points here
  1. Every Country does a business prospective survey in terms of new market potentials for either of a greenfield nature (a new type new buiness) or brownfield expansion (capacity addition to their existing businesses)of their existing businesses.
  2. The sentiments is part of a much wider assessment which are broadly divided into 3 major classes
    1. Individual Risk
      • Based on Cost of Production
      • Linkages to the markets of existing and new potential
      • Financial considerations
      • The outlook and vision for the company
      • Management experience and focus
      • Positioning and brand value increase plan
      • etc etc
    2. Sector Risk
      • Demand Risk (Revenues, Sales etc)
      • Profitability (Price of raw material, Transport and logistical cost, etc)
      • Financing Risk (liquidity risk, payment perspective, capital needs, etc)
      • Business Environment (tech innovation, government support and subsidy schemes, legal framework, etc)
    3. Country Risk
      • Medium Term
        1. Economic Risk
        2. Political Risk
        3. Structural Business Environment
      • Short Term
        • Business Cycle
        • Financing Cost Risk
  3. Now based on this a complete analysis is done and a relative score is generated to understand a potential for investment and present/past investment evaluation
  4. The survey mentioned by OP points to a part of this assessment which pegs the Pakistan potential relatively 2% higher than India.
  5. But the other factors in cumulative basis seems to make India more favorable for such investments. Thats why you see real Japanese investments in India as compared to Pakistan in terms of Dollar, Yen and strategically or nationally important projects.
  6. A soft loan with low interest for 50 years will not be granted if the assessment scores are not upto mark.
  7. If you see with honesty, China rose to economic might over decades due to favorable overall assessment with such criterion.
  8. China has done the unthinkable to become the biggest economic engine for the whole planet and India needs to imbibe few of those qualities if it wants a economic prosperity like China.
  9. Also India does need to understand the issues pertaining to being favorable for very long time too, every plus has a minus side and that creates issues.
  10. An example is the pollution issue or damage to Earth's environment which ppl tend to blame to developing nations and sometimes China in spite of the fact that it is other nations who invested a lot in the "guise" of favorable sentiments.
  11. The positive thing is Pakistan as a country is ticking some of the right boxes.
  12. For a stable and prosperous Pakistan, it is very important that all other cofactors are also considered and improved in order to get a much better overall assessment score.
  13. The rise in such scores will see real investments and real turnaround in Pakistan's economy which will lead to higher per capita income and well being of its citizens.
  14. One important thing Pakistan needs to do is diversify more investments coming into Pakistan. And for that this overall assessment will help them much more.
Dont go by emotions and write anything and everything in the threads. Economic prosperity at times eases the real issue of military confrontation as the well being of a country's citizen takes paramount importance. Thus it leads to more of a stable deterrence of minimum value and more economic and trade bonding which increases inter dependency and dilutes the ill sentiments over time.

@WAJsal knows why i can speak and write all this as i shared what I do in my real professional life.So dont think i am giving here empty words. i see potential for every country in this planet.. especially for south east Asia.
Pakistan and India are two of the biggest markets in South East Asia.. India has a favorable score as of today and hence we see the real investments. If Pakistan improves on the cofactors, i see realistic investment growth in Pakistan by many countries including Japan.

Sir Indian community is already divided into 4-5 Bigger Chunks.... Section of higher Order look down upon other Guys or feel inferior to hang around with them or touch them .....Lowest Section in hierarchy have no place in India they do petty jobs to meet their both hands....they are called Dalits......for a Society who is already divided within itself....they take Pride in terms like ....British slave, Japanese slave.....like they did take pride in Muslims India .... like Taj Mahal ..... they wear Muslim clothes....eat our foods...enjoy our Poetry But.....After having all that they wont give the Credit where it is due.....instead!! they come over to you by saying....
- Taj Mahal was outcome of Indian Taxpayer money
- Urdu and Hindi was invented in India...not Arabs/Turks brought with them :enjoy:
Maybe Shanghai should work hard for at least 30 years to catch up bombai

Let me give you an example of China's HSR project in Indonesia. Though it uses Chinese standard, this standard is compatible to world standards. In the future, Indonesians can use China's CRRC trains (biggest rolling stock manufacturer in the world), they can also connect this high-speed rail to their existing railways or use Alstom/Bombardier trains. However, Japan chose India to build their first high-speed rail in India, which means, Indians will have to stick to Japanese standard and Japanese products(Japanese are smart), which is a total closed standard. It means, India has excluded herself from the world. China won't create such closed standard, cause she is ambitious for Eurasia integration as opposed to monopolising in this region.

Yes, I am very happy, Indonesia choose Chinese HSR than Japan train.
and by the way, China is more Experienced to Building High Speed Railway in Tropic climate area than japan. 8-)
China already build many High Speed Railway in Hainan Island, a beauty tropical island :smitten:

China's Hainan Island have the only tropical high-speed railways in the world, West Ring and East Ring, forming a loop with bullet trains every 10-15 minutes linking the provincial capital city Haikou in the north to the beach city Sanya in the south. Such expertise will help Chinese companies overcome obstacles and difficulty in building another tropical high-speed railway in Indonesia. A piece of cake!

Measures to prevent erosion & corrosion in the construction of Hainan high-speed rail
Due to geographic and climate conditions, building the loop line rail on Hainan Island presented greater difficulties than on the mainland. CCTV reporter looks at the special technologies and measures used.

Building a railway on an island means erosion and corrosion are constant threats. The water in this river has high concentrations of sulphate and chloride salt. A waterproof coating is applied to the lower 1.5 meters of every supporting pillar.

The fog has a high concentration of salt, so all electrical wires are galvanized. And the coating is twice as thick as on the mainland.

"These measures can prolong the the life of the railway. And the fees for maintenance and repair can be reduced by those measures, too," said Chi Pingping, Chief Engineer of West Section Project of Hainan Circuit Railway.

Another threat is thunderstorms, which may cause a short circuit. Hainan can see up to 120 days of thunderstorms a year on average.

Metal uprights along two sides of the railway every 200 meters serve as lightning rods. When it comes to the safety of public transport, no detail is too small to be overlooked.

@Brahmaputra Mail @Nihonjin1051
Pakistan has strong economic relationship with both China and Japan. Many Chinese and Japanese Companes are doing business in Pakistan. Toyota, Honda, Mitsibishi, Subaru, Yamaha, Yokohama, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi, Komatsu etc. are some of the Japanese Companies doing profitable business in Pakistan since the early late 60s. Your notion that every contract goes to China is totally incorrect.

Correct. If i may add, in respect to the Greater South Asian Dialectic Paradigm, Japan maintains and upholds a pro-developmentalist, pro-regionalist, pro-cooperative interoperability mechanism with all countries in South Asia. There is constant rapport and good will operations between Japan and Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. As many of you may know there are over a thousand Japanese businesses in India, over a thousand in Bangladesh, hundreds operating in Pakistan, Nepal and a growing number in Bhutan. Japan has a massive project with Bangladesh, which is a muslim dominant nation, as well as with India, a Hindu dominant nation. We have the same with Sri Lanka , which is a Buddhist dominant nation. There is also a force in the Japanese keidenren who want to invest more in Pakistan , and as soon as the threat of regional separatism is decreased in Pakistan, there is no reason why Japanese investments cannot increase in tandem. As we speak, as Pakistan slowly stabilizes her borders through her anti-separatist campaigns, the more international image of stability of Pakistan is disseminated.

Pakistan has a rich potential here and will be the next cornerstone for Japanese designs in South Asia. Like India, Pakistan is blessed with
  1. Natural resources, hydro-carbons, metals
  2. Hydropower potential
  3. Large population, young population
  4. A rich coastline
  5. And access to the greater Central Asian region

Looking forward to blooming relations between our ancient friends and partners, Pakistan and the Pakistani People !

My friend, you should know that we Japanese do not like to see the world through the black and white eyes of Geopolitics. Geopolitical rivalry is just so subjective and prose'. You know?

Japan long has operated on a multidimensional praxis. We believe in the importance of the grassroots level exchange, the cultural exchange, academic exchange, economic and local government exchange. These ultimately helps biuld a positive imagery of each other on the people to people level, which has a long term effect.

Pakistan has been one of post-war Japan's friends and partners. In fact it was Pakistan as the first country to recognize Japan as a state after the war. Or the first state to normalize relations with Japan. Even earlier than the Republic of India. The father of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Sir Jindal, was a friend of Japan's Emperor Showa (Hirohito) and were frequent political friends. It was the friendship with Jindal that enbabled Japan, early on after the war, to maneuver and improve relations with post-British rule South Asia. This is how relations between Japan and Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and then ultimately Bangladesh was built upon.

We Japanese do not function or operate on the 'favoritism' lens. Yes, what the Indian members here say is right that there is a larger Japanese FDI in India, but only because India has a larger infrastructure base compared to Pakistan. This limitation does not mean Japan will be hesitant to invest in Pakistan, merely it means that there is much more to be done in Pakistan. There is rich potential!

I believe that Japan will work cooperatively with all states of South Asia. Ultimately the integration of the massive South Asian market(s) is what will propel the global economic machine in this century. China is developed or has already reached her capitalization potential. It is now the age of South Asia's rise.

This is where Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan com into play.

Imagine, my friend, a market of more than 1.7 BILLION. Its the largest regional market in the world. :)

India is excluded from China's grand initiatives of linking Eurasia.
as they have their own plans

Then Indians and your newspaper should stop comparing India to China since your entire GDP is less than our poorest Western China.

and that so called GPD is stagnant rather falling apart and will fall furthermore like the stock markets crashed and will crash furthermore , so meltdown too is possible as there is the other side of coin too . dont feel so much euphoric abbout the so called GDP's as they can be real and artificial numbers{ ( zheng fu zong shi very very busy xiong bu zhong ji he xuan chun ) }. the world know how china manipulated her GDP by creating waste infrastructure all around the country , just to educate you a bit more , yuan will have at least 2 more devaluations this year just to support falling exports which is a real cause of worry as domestic market can not always be manipulated with lower interest rates moreover china has very weak domestic market for what she produce for exports <>! ~~

on topic #
it will be good for pakistan and the region as well as japan as business and trade promotes peace and tranquility which is correlated to $$ these days .

@Nihonjin1051

And Pakistan respects and spends money to protect Buddhist heritage sites and places of worship. Pakistan is now the 4th biggest country in the world with 200+ million people and we look for positive relationship with all of our trading partners including Japan. If India is planning to somehow pitch Japan against Pakistan in some military alliance it will fail. Japan is our friend and we want peace between China and Japan.
