TOKYO

Japanese officials have warned against escalated tensions in the East China Sea after a record number of Chinese government vessels were reportedly spotted around disputed islands Monday.

Over the weekend, Tokyo lodged a number of protests with Beijing after around 230 Chinese fishing boats and seven coast guard ships were spotted Saturday in a contiguous zone near the Senkaku Islands, followed by 13 vessels spotted Sunday -- some of which entered “Japanese territorial waters”.

Kyodo news agency cited Japan’s coast guard as saying a record 14 Chinese government vessels -- some reportedly equipped with weapons -- entered a contiguous zone Monday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a press conference that the coast guard and other related bodies “will work in close coordination to deal with [the situation]”.

"We will continue to firmly urge China not to escalate the situation," he was quoted as saying by Kyodo.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stressed the need for calm and firm action in accordance with international and domestic law, calling on relevant authorities Saturday to work in close coordination with the United States and other related countries.

The Senkakus -- which China calls the Diaoyu Islands -- are a group of uninhabited islets currently controlled by Japan.

High-level dialogue between China and Japan had been suspended for two years prior to a meeting in Nov. 2014 between their leaders due to tension following the Japanese government’s purchase of three of the disputed islands in September 2012.

. . . . .
 We are sending civilian vessel. Why are they so scare?
They are having premonitions of more civilian vessels will be snooping around the area. I bet they are sweating like a roasted pig, that's how nervous they really are

. .
As they heard that Chang Wanguan want China is ready for people war on sea.
It makes no sense for the the MOST advance country in the universe to be scare of civilian vessel. You don't hear and see us got scare by our foe deploy military vessel near our coast, let alone this is within the EEZ and far away from any land border.

What can Japan do apart from this?

The best thing for Japan to do is to avoid a direct confrontation with China and have their own fishing event at different time. In this way, it will be a win-win scenario for both side without the loss of face.

They are definitely worried. Sometimes nations act hastily out of fear and if Japan decides to act against China at sea the US won't stop Japan when the US is seeking an opportunity to harm China. Matter of fact, this time it seems like the US will encourage Japan for a naval confrontation with China. What China should consider is the distance and time it would take to replenish her vessels with logistics in case of fatality. The US might be planning to provoke at several points including the SCS at the same time in order to confuse Chinese forces. Their first logical step will be to go after the Chinese air bases on mainland China so that China cannot provide complete air support to her vessels during the conflict. Are the Chinese leaders thinking about this possibility? If the US decides to go after the Chinese air bases they will definitely do it with the help of stealth bombers and for air support most probably they'll use raptors. I believe the Russians have the ability to track the raptors, China should lease those radars from Russia immediately if acquiring them takes time.
