Yes, it can carry one, but carrying MBTs won't be a priority, vehicle transport in general will be and for that we need numbers of aircrafts that can do it, like the XC-2 or A400.

India might be Export Hub for Japanese ShinMaywa US-2 airplanes

According to sources close to idrw.org , India might be developed into Export Hub for Japanese ShinMaywa US-2 air planes. India and Japan are currently negotiating for the purchase of 15 ShinMaywa US-2 amphibious planes for Indian navy which likely will station this aircrafts in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Japan which has self-imposed ban on defense exports from 1967, were able to get special permission for export of this planes to India , but Japanese have seen great Interest in this planes from other countries too but Japan’s own policies will hinder further sell of this planes , So India might Licence built this plane and Japan will help in marketing and its export which will be win win situation for both of them .

Indonesia and Brunei have shown interest in ShinMaywa US-2 amphibious planes and many other countries are too interested in them , Japan and India are working out details of the agreement , where Japan will provide only kit of the plane and India will carry out modification to fit required sensors for Sea Surveillance .

chances are a Private Indian partner might be roped in for licence manufacturing in India and Japanese company will provide all technical support to Indian partner for re-export of this planes . Indian Navy might end up with bigger orders for US-2 amphibious planes since current requirement of 15 planes is for first batch . It will be interesting to see how the deal further expands .

Ministry eyes Japan-made AEW aircraft

The Defense Ministry is set to start research aimed at domestically manufacturing early-warning aircraft for the first time, with the aim of increasing surveillance on possible incursions into the nation’s territorial airspace, according to ministry sources...

The ministry is planning to cooperate with private-sector companies to make a prototype aircraft next fiscal year, the sources said.

The ministry plans to base the fuselage on the P-1, a state-of-the-art antisubmarine patrol aircraft it developed, the sources said. This would be outfitted with radar that employs domestic technology such as that used in stationary ground radar.
