We are at a huge dis-advantage. Surrounded by hostile nuclear-powered neighbors. Border disputes with China need to be solved. India aligning with a group of countries won't help. Better we stay out of this shit and stay on the sidelines.

No one gonna share their superior technology to others. It's better u develop urself. In reality japan don't want others Asian naval force to become strong in Asia region. A hour ago i was watching Japanese WWII submarine aircraft carrier documentary in yt which was get destroyed by americans after end of WWII so russians can't get their hands on that technology. Japanese comes with great idea in naval technology. I hope they keep it alive.

I understand your weariness @Sam. , but i want to keep a door open that looks at the rational possibility of military defense spending and growth as a catalyst for regional stability. One regional concern has been the acts / threats of hegemony by China. This is in violation of the 1978 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the People's Republic of China and Japan, which specifically highlited that neither parties would engage in acts of military hegemony in Asia-Pacific. China's recently 9 dash claim over SCS, its ADIZ that violates Japan's, and its prehensile actions involving the Senkaku Islands does nothing to keep and stability. Japan's re-militarizaiton will ensure that there is a healthy rapport between Japan and key powers in ASEAN and in the Pacific.

Japan has recently participated in Pacific Partnership with Vietnam, the Philippines, the United States and Australia. This is the basis for a regional partnership. In fact, just this past week, Japan had participated in naval exercises with India and the United States. I believe that by holding greater military partnerships with key powers, we can prevent one power from gaining or exercising hegemony in the region. This will ensure freedom of navigation, and security calm.

My own personal list that is not based on any academic studies, so feel free to critique. China and Russia are simply not superpowers, but they are on a different category of major powers due to large military, unsc, economy, resource, political influence over neighboring states, and most importantly an independent foreign policy, (the other major powers are in USA camp).

We can agree that Italy is not a major power, but it is far more influential than Vietnam, hence my use of + and -.

You are not very ambitious for your country...I don't think Japan can do anything really meaningful. France can do military operations in Africa because they are former colonies, plus we are a security council member...we have territories all over the world and the third largest diplomatic network...but still France is weak compared to the US...Japan is in an even more difficult position...

I did not intend to sound pessimist but i was mentioning the possibility of collision as when china is developing at fast race and it's all good for the region as region develop with them too but i think when their pace will be halted then they will use tactics to gain more resources to feed their industries.( just a mere speculation )
