Japan coast guard detains Chinese boat after short chase and collision, AP reports

TOKYO (TR) Japans coast guard arrested a Chinese skipper on Sunday after he ignored orders to stop during an attempt to inspect his fishing boat near the Goto Islands, the Associated Press said, citing Japanese authorities.
Coast guard officials said it was unclear why the captain, Zhang Tianxiong, from Chinas Fujian province refused the inspection Sunday while in Japanese territorial waters west of Nagasaki, according to the AP. The Japanese coast guard rammed the 135-ton ship during the chase, the AP reported.
A similar incident in the East China Sea in September 2010, lead to a diplomatic standoff between Tokyo and Beijing. In that incident, a Japanese patrol boat and Chinese trawler collided near disputed Islandsjust north of Taiwan claimed by both Japan and China. Those islands are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu by China.
Foreign vessels are allowed to pass through Japanese waters, though fishing is prohibited. The skipper faces up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $3,840 if convicted, the AP said.
