Japan asks France to stop Mistral sale to Russia - IHS Jane's 360

Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera on 29 July expressed "strong concerns" over France's plan to sell two Mistral-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) ships to Moscow, citing the ongoing Ukraine crisis and Russia's recent military buildup in the Asia-Pacific region.

In his fourth meeting with French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, Onodera said Russia had been strengthening its capabilities and stepping up military operations and training in the region.

Asked about the reason why Japan just expressed deep concerns, instead of requesting the cancellation of France's plan to sell the ships to Russia, Onodera said: "To express our concerns is the same as saying, 'Can't you cancel the plan?'."

Lol. Looks like Japan just discarded their last pretenses that they are a sovereign country. Just a hired mouthpiece...

For someone who knows the region very well, you think there is a reason why Japan is distrustful of Russia.

.
France is making some really good Monie with the sales though. Russia singlehandedly revive ship building in france. I guess france can sell to china instead but can't due to 1989 embargo. Russia SK Japan will all have large helicopter carriers now. I think china will start building them next.

.
Asking France to cancel a 1.6 billion $ contract 3 years into the contract is simply irrational.

.
Ever since the U.S. backing, the Japanese now has become a big brother.
started Sanctions someone

.
Japan is not a realaible partner in weapons if any one buys in future
they will change there mind after even agremment

it is jsut a mistral why Japan is so scared

.
I was under the impression that the Japanese wanted strong ties with the Russians.

What happened to Abe-san's bold initiative to normalize relations?

What has Ukraine situation got to do with Japan ?

Is Japan headed again towards becoming a hegemon under Abe Administration ?

Japan don't have an independent foreign policy.
That's why.

They are an American colony.

Japan has no choice but to do everything the US tells them.
This is what happens when you don't have an independent foreign policy.

Do the US have a need for helicopter carrier?

. . . .
He's just an attention seeker civilized people should ignore.

Japan naturally sides with the west so there's no surprise here.
