Jammu and Kashmir has been allotted 130 million tonne of coal block
in Odisha which would be used to build a 1,000 MW thermal power project
to end electricity woes of the state, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Friday.

"Jammu and Kashmir has been allotted 130 million tonne of open cast coal
mine in Odisha. This will enable us to set up a 1,000 MW thermal power
project," the chief minister posted on micro blogging site twitter.

He, however, said that it has not yet been decided whether the thermal
power project would be in Odisha or within Jammu and Kashmir.

"We now have to decide whether to locate the power house at the pit head
or within the state but should have additional 1,000 MW in three years,
"
Omar tweeted.

During his recent visit to the state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had
laid the foundation stone of an 850 MW hydro electric power project on the
Chenab river in Kishtwar district
.

The prime minister also announced an additional daily allocation of 150 MW
of electricity to the state to help tide over the power crisis
.

Jammu and Kashmir has been spending more than 3,000 crore annually
on buying electricity from outside the state, while its annual revenue
collection on account of electricity supplied to consumers has been just
over 1,000 crore.

Is there any thread on PDF which deals with infrastructure and development in P0K?

Thats a very good news. First Rail then hydroelectric power station and now thermal power station and all these withing 10 days. Good going Jammu and Kashmir. We are exactly doing what is best for Kashmir i.e development and infrastructure in good pace.

It's the ONLY way that these separatist/terrorist thoughts are going to die away-long term.

+1000!!
------------Will JK be connected to the Indian national grid or will they be self-sufficient in their power generation?
Actually there are few grievances among the people that they want the water to be used for Kashmir first. They want larger share in electricity generated and water too.

Well, such issues are being looked at. As for national grid, sorry buddy, don't have any info on that.

...It makes economic sense to locate teh power plant at the pit head...but political sense to locate the PP at J&K...but that would be a poor decision..
imagine coal from Odisha to J&K...!!!!!!!
Hope economic sense prevails over the political sense.

Good that they're not going for the hydel power... it is overdoing of that sort of thing that brought disaster to Uttarakhand.

We don't want that in another state so soon, do we?
