People get even with Taliban in Dir

By Delawar Jan

PESHAWAR: Hundreds of armed people of Hayagay Sharqi, Kilot, Doon and Man Doog attacked six villages of Doog Darra harbouring the Afghan militants affiliated with the Taliban, killing several of them besides torching their houses.

According to sketchy reports from Doog Darra, six persons, including a commander of the militants identified as Chamtu, were killed and as many houses were torched. Some sources put the number of casualties at two. Locals said that heavy and light weapons were being used during the attack.

“We saw two houses, owned by Taliban supporters, that were set on fire by the advancing armed people. They captured most of the bunkers from the militants while heavy firing is still continuing,” a resident of Doog Darra, wishing anonymity, told The News by phone late Saturday.

The people of Hayagay Sharqi held the Taliban responsible for the deadly suicide blast in a mosque that killed 49 worshippers on Friday and launched the action to kill or evict them.

The resident who talked to The News said that the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained due to the darkness but said the Taliban might have been killed in large numbers as the Lashkar had eliminated the militants manning the bunkers.

Earlier, an elder of the area, wishing anonymity, said they would not allow the foreign militants to remain entrenched in the area and rule the people through terror.

“We had no hostility with the Taliban except that we are not ready to allow them to unleash terror here. We cannot tolerate the foreign militants in the area and we will keep opposing them,” he told The News by phone.

“They killed our children and we are not going to spare them. We will certainly take action against the Taliban to avenge the death of our sons.”

However, he refused to go into the details as to when they could launch action.

It merits a mention here that the people of Miana Doog — situated to the southeast of five villages of Panaghar, Maluk Khwar, Bar Doog, Ghazigay and Shatkas that have given shelter to the militants — have also been strong opponents of the Taliban militants operating under an Afghan commander, Amir Khitab. Hayagay is situated to the west of these five villages of Doog Darra. Besieged by these two villages, the militants have been unsuccessful in carrying out their militant activities in other areas. Therefore, the Taliban are desperate to subjugate the people of both the villages by using their dreadful tactic of suicide bombing.

The people of Miana Doog had taken up arms against the militants in January to secure the release of a former Afghan official the Taliban had kept in Doog Darra. However, their efforts to force the militants to leave the area failed despite winning pledges several times from the militants.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the Friday’s suicide attack reached 49.

A suicide bomber ripped through a mosque, which was full of worshippers preparing for Friday prayers, killing at least 40.

Some people, including children, were reported missing, which has led many to believe that they might have also been blown up. However, there were conflicting accounts about the final death toll. “We laid to rest 49 blast victims on Friday night,” a man, who was in the area during the burial, said. He said three children were still missing.

A villager, Omar Rahman, told The News that the death toll could be more than 40. However, he said that they buried 33 persons while eight others were missing. He said that the people were grief-stricken, but in high spirits. He did not rule out the threat of more suicide attacks in gatherings for condolences, but said they were not afraid of such tactics. He said that the people were vigilant and would take care of the security of the area to the best of their ability.

Rahman said the atmosphere was gloomy as several families in the village had seen more than one casualty in a single day.

A family lost its head, Fazlur Rahman, in the incident. Among the dead were also his three sons, including 7-year-old Abdullah and young Ismail. The name of the third one could not be ascertained. Their family members were shaken, wailing over the irreparable loss inflicted on them for no fault of theirs.

Ahmad Jan and Bakht Badshah also died along with their two sons each in the blast. The area has already seen a lot of bloodshed due to blood feuds.

The injured were flown from Timergara to Peshawar on Saturday for provision of better treatment.

More such reporting must be publicized, Pakistanis, regardless of their ethnicity do not care for such extremists and bigots hiding behind the noble skirt of religion.

Recently much has been made that citizens of Pakistan do not confer legitimacy on the Pakistani state, it is not so much that such notions are wrong bu tthat they are irrelevent, what the citizenry think of as a basic right, is to be safe and will confer legitimacy on any who will forcefully ensure that right and guard it against any usurper.

Then there are those among us who serve as the information arm and enablers of terrorists, they want to convince us that these terrorists ought to be supported, but Pakistanis are interested in Pakistan and in making our lives better, so our children's lives will be better, that they will have a chance at being better persons; persons who can not only help themselves but others.

Amongst us, suporters of the terrorists try and convince us that theirs is a religious and ethnic movement based on ethics and morality, and yet we see clearly just how they are percieved by the local peoples, they are but criminals and rebels who have sold themselves to foreigners and a foreign ideology.

Some 400 villagers from neighboring Upper Dir district, where a suicide bomber killed more then 30 worshippers at a mosque in the Haya Gai area on Friday, formed a militia and attacked five villages in the nearby Dhok Darra area, said Atif-ur-Rehman, the district coordination officer.

The citizens' militia has occupied three of the villages since Saturday and is trying to push the Taliban out of the other two. Some 20 houses suspected of harbouring Taliban were destroyed, he said. At least four militants were killed, he said.

UPPER DIR: Two Taliban commanders and their four fighters were killed in an armed action taken by a tribal Lashkar in the Doog Darra area of Upper Dir district on Sunday.

(According to AP news agency 11 militants were killed in the attack.)

The Lashkar was formed in Hayagay Sharqi, and was supported by people of Hayagay Gharbi, Doon, Kilot and Miana Doog villages, after the suicide attack on a local mosque during Friday prayers that killed over 30 people, including several children.

The Lashkar stormed Taliban bunkers in Doog Darra, Salam Bekay, Ghazigay, Shatkas, Panaghar and Maluk Khwar and torched about 20 houses of people who harboured militants.

People from several other villages joined the Lashkar to expel Taliban from their area.

According to local people, both sides were using heavy weapons in fierce clashes between the Lashkar and the Taliban.

Sources said the village force was attacking Taliban positions in Shatkas, Miana and Doog Bala.

Meanwhile, people of Maluk Khwar and Panaghar villages, who were active supporters

of the militants, also parted ways with them after the mosque blast and announced support for the tribal Lashkar and vowed to evict militants from the area.

Doog Darra area, it may be mentioned, was attacked by planes in the third week of May.

Two men of the Lashkar identified as Shah Khalid and Mohammad Ayaz were injured in Sunday’s clash.

The militants, holed up in their stronghold of Shatkas and Gazigay, were putting up stiff resistance, the sources said.

Agencies add: The incident underscored a swing in the national mood towards a more anti-Taliban stance, a shift that comes as suicide attacks have surged and the military wages an offensive in the Swat valley.

DCO Atif-ur-Rehman said some 400 villagers formed a Lashkar and attacked five villages in Doog Darra area.

The militia has occupied three of the villages since Saturday and is trying to push the Taliban out of the other two.

The government has encouraged local people to set up militias to oust Taliban fighters.

‘It is something very positive that tribesmen are standing against the militants. It will discourage the miscreants,’ Mr Rehman said.

He said around 200 militants were putting up stiff resistance in their strongholds surrounded by the villagers.

‘We will send security forces, maybe artillery too, if the villagers ask for reinforcement,’ he said.

PESHAWAR: The leader of a Taliban faction at odds with Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud denounced Mehsud for staging attacks inside the country — a sign of rivalries within the collection of groups identified as the Taliban.

In a face-to-face interview with a US news agency, Qari Zainuddin urged tribal leaders to resist Mehsud and said his fighters — he claimed to have 3,000 — would stay neutral if the army launches an operation in South Waziristan, Mehsud's stronghold.

"Whatever Baitullah Mehsud and his associates are doing in the name of Islam is not a jihad, and in fact it is rioting and terrorism," Zainuddin said. "Islam stands for peace, not for terrorism."

Zainuddin's long-term motives remain unclear. He insisted he would resist any U.S. attempts to attack Pakistan.

On Monday Pakistani tribesman avenging a mosque attack surrounded two militant strongholds and destroyed the homes of some Taliban commanders.

The news agency said that as many as 1,600 tribesmen have joined a citizens' militia in Upper Dir district as the military pursues its offensive against the militant group in the nearby Swat Valley.

The militias, known as lashkars, were focusing on two villages known as Taliban strongholds, said Khaista Rehman, a local police chief. Officials said Sunday the tribesmen had managed to clear three other villages.

"An intense fight between the lashkar and the Taliban is still going on and the lashkar has destroyed 25 homes of Taliban commanders and their fighters in various villages," Rehman told the news agency by phone.

"The Taliban had set up their offices in those villages but the local residents and the lashkar have attacked them, and we hope the lashkar will succeed."

The attack on the mosque Friday left 33 worshippers dead and wounded dozens more during prayers, angering residents of the Haya Gai area of Upper Dir district, where minor clashes with local militants have occurred for months.

11 militants die in Dir Upper

Saturday, June 20, 2009

By Delawar Jan

PESHAWAR: Eleven Taliban combatants were killed in Doog Darra area of Dir Upper by armed villagers and artillery shelling by security forces as the militants started fleeing the area after giving up resistance.

Also, the Chitral police arrested 10 fleeing militants, including an Afghan national, who was in an injured condition, when they sneaked into the district to escape the villagersí onslaught. The armed villagers have ringed the Taliban militants, led by Afghan commander Amir Khitab, since June 6 in the mountains in Doog Darra area.

They were heavily pounding the positions of the Taliban militants and killed a number of them. However, in recent days they intensified their offensive, launched to avenge the killings in the June 5 suicide blast at a mosque in Hayagay.

Helping the Lashkar, security forces deployed artillery guns in Panakot area near the Dir town and Beranjo in Doog Darra. The locals said firing with heavy weapons by the Lashkar and artillery shelling panicked the holed-up militants.

Sources in Lashkar and locals said the militants were attempting to escape the intensified action. ìThey (the militants) cannot fight us and have been hiding in caves. They have given up resistance and did not fire for the last five days,î Mutabar Khan, the Lashkar chief, told The News by phone.

He also claimed that the militants were now fleeing during night time to the neighbouring Chitral district where, he said, they had hideouts. On Friday, he added, 10 militants, including an injured Afghan, were arrested in Dewrai Khwar by the Chitral police. Sources in the Chitral police also confirmed the arrest of 10 militants.

ìWe will not let them escape from Doog Darra. We want them to be killed,î Mutabar said. Responding a question, he said the Lashkar had besieged them from all sides, but they were facing difficulty in plugging the escape routes completely at the Chitral border as the terrain was quite tough.

However, he said that more fighters were being sent to the area along Chitral to stop the militants from escaping. ìThey cannot bring in or take out even one kilogram of flour from other three sides, but we need to send more people of the Lashkar to the border along Chitral to check the fleeing militants,î he said.

Mutabar said they believe 80-100 militants had been left in the area, adding that they were just 400 meters away from them. ìWe will be able to eliminate them soon,î he said while avoiding giving a timeframe for the defeat of the militants.

Lashkar sources and people in the area said the armed villagers had killed six militants when they were trying to escape on Friday. The locals said that they had been seeing the militants digging graves to bury their men killed during the fighting with the Lashkar. The sources said five militants were killed in artillery shelling in Paparo Ghar, Kandao and Ghazigay. The Lashkar has so far killed at least 36 militants.

Looks like the end is near for the militants in Upper Dir - one more district secured.

Well the lashkars can only be effective once they are sure of GOP intent to deal out the necessary punishment to the terrorists with extreme prejudice.
This had always been missing before and so the Lashkars failed before in face of the organized terror campaign of TTP which eliminated thousands of maliks, elders and Jirga members.
Tribals are a culture who honor the martial values and if they see a meek government apologizing to those who are kicking it in the guts...you shall never win them over but rather earn their disgust.
Thankfully the awam are now aware of GOP commitment and seriousness of PA which has been given a free hand for the first time regarding the scope of operation in being specific to all terrorists and not just some areas.
This shall inshallah bear fruit and win back the trust which was lost in many previous years.
Once tribes start respecting the GOP and trust its ability to exercise its due right in setting things straight the balance of power will shift as it is already shifting...
A show of force is something which motivates as well and many a times is the catalyst for building a stronger nation.
