The Project 11711 amphibious transport was developed for the Russian Navy as a successor to the previous Project 1171 Tapir (Western designation Alligator class) landing ships. It is commonly known as the Ivan Gren class, after the lead ship. By Russian classification these vessels are referred as large landing ships.

The lead ship of the class, Ivan Gren, was laid down in 2004, but was launched only in 2012 due to funding problems. It will be commissioned with the Russian Navy in 2017 and will be operational with the Northern Fleet.

In 2010 another ship of the class was ordered. It was laid down in 2015 as the Petr Morgunov, and is planned to be commissioned in 2018. It is likely that it will be operational with the Pacific Fleet.

Originally the Russian Navy planned to build and operate a total of 6 Ivan Gren class landing ships. However in 2015 it was reported that only two ships will be operational and no new ships will be built.

In 2010 the Russian Navy ordered 2 Mistral class amphibious assault ships from France. These are much more capable vessels than the Ivan Gren class. However the deal was eventually cancelled by France due to Russia's military actions in Ukraine. In 2015 two French-built ships from the Russian contract were sold to Egypt instead.

Primary mission of the Ivan Gren class ships are amphibious landing operations. It can perform traditional over-the-beach assault. These ships can be also used for logistical transport of military vehicles and cargo.

The Ivan Gren class is actually based on a proven Project 1171 Tapir landing ship, which was built in large numbers by the same shipyard. However the Ivan Gren has been significantly redesigned and externally has little in common with its predecessor. Some measures were taken to reduce radar cross-section of the ship in order to make it more stealthier to radars. However these amphibious landing ships are by no means true stealth vessels.

The Ivan Gren class can carry up to 13 main battle tanks with a maximum weight of 60 t. Alternatively it can carry up to 36 infantry fighting vehicles or armored personnel carriers, or 300 marines.

To perform over-the-beach assault the ship uses the bow doors with internal ramp to disembark vehicles. Also there is a rear ramp which is used by onboard fast landing craft. A total of 2 or 3 landing craft are carried by the ship.

The Ivan Gren has one helicopter spot on the deck and hangar, that can accommodate two Ka-29assault transport helicopters. These helicopters can land marines ashore and support support amphibious operations with their firepower. The Ka-29 helicopters can be also used for utility transport and medical evacuation roles.

It was originally planned that the Ivan Gren class ships will be armed with a 100 mm gun dual-purpose gun, two Grad-M 122mm multiple launch rocket systems for saturation shore bombardment, and two Palash air defense gun/missile systems. However in 2010 the Russian Navy decided to simplify weapons of this landing ship in order to reduce production price. Eventually the lead ship was fitted with less capable armament, including an AK-630M-2 Duet close-in weapon system with two six-barrel 30 mm automatic cannons, and two additional six-barrel AK-630M 30 mm close-in weapon systems. All of these weapons can be used against land, surface and air targets, as well as for close range defense against incoming anti-ship missiles. Also there are two 14.5 mm heavy machine guns.

The Ivan Gren class is fitted with a countermeasures system, which launches decoys. This system reduces the chance of being hit by enemy missiles.

This military transport ship is powered by two diesel engines, developing 5 000 shp each. Power is delivered to two shafts. Maximum range is 6 480 km (3 500 nautical miles) at 30 km/h (16 knots). Sea endurance without resupply is 30 days.
