It's official: Los Angeles to host the 2028 Olympic Summer Games

In line with Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC is pleased to release today the Host City Contract 2028 following the declaration of candidature by the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee for the Olympic Games 2028. In it, the IOC stipulates that it will make contributions to the Organising Committee representing an overall estimated value of USD 1.8 billion.

In comparison to the Host City Contract 2024, the IOC is making two major changes: the IOC will advance funds to a Los Angeles Organising Committee in view of the longer planning period and to increase participation and access to youth sports programmes in the City of Los Angeles in the years leading up to the Games.

“The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee. and we are pleased to release the Host City contract 2028 in a transparent and timely manner,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Los Angeles presented an excellent candidature that embraces the Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability priorities by maximising the use of existing facilities and encouraging the engagement of more youth in the Olympic Movement. Therefore, we are very happy that, as part of this Host City Contract, we are able to increase the access of the city’s youth to sport, and encourage the healthy lifestyle of Angelenos for the next 11 years. We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the IOC with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners. This agreement will be put forward to the IOC Session in Lima in September for ratification.”

The IOC will continue to work in close collaboration with Los Angeles in the lead-up to the possible ratification of the tripartite agreement by the full IOC membership at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.

this is great, but to be honest I can't wait til the next summer Olympics in China. it's just hosting the Olympics is just so d*** expensive, and China likes to go all out for these things. let them bare the tab.

Well, I am excited. There's a lot of construction and renovation going on in the L.A. area, especially in downtown and the west side. It will be a good time to show off the new look of the city. I'll be sure to catch a couple of the events.

We do want the Olympics, just not the traffic.

I passed thru SLC before the 2002 Olympics and during the Olympics. The city was upgrading I-15 and the traffic was terrible. Once it took me 2 hrs to move 5 miles before I managed to escape thru an off ramp. Then when the Olympics was underway, the traffic was terrible. Still, I think it is a good thing to have. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many different people from other countries before I had to leave the city.

LA will be utilizing both the Coliseum and new LA Rams/Chargers NFL stadium in the opening and closing ceremonies.

The same with hosting Olympics too...the cost of hosting Olympics is too much for the benefit the host country gets out of it.

Very smart way of doing it. We're seeing a shift from the old ways of doing things where the countries (in this case, city) which are awarded the games have to spend hundreds of millions of $ to build these specialized, high-end sports facilities and living compounds for the athletes that end up hardly been used once the games are over and essentially a waste of money. In this case, LA is really one of many great sports and all-around cities in this great country. A lot of those huge facilities are already big ticket stadiums and centers. The LA Convention Center, the Memorial Colosseum, the Staples Center (where those DREADED LAKERS PLAY and where our Celtics beat them down all the time ), the Forum and the Rose Bowl Stadium (where the crappy Galaxy used to play lol) all existing places where HUGE (mostly sporting) events take place.

I just think of how packed the Rose Bowl Stadium gets during college football season, and the Rose Bowl itself!

Waiting for the day NASCAR or some form of stock car racing becomes an official Olympic sport haha. Just think of what Talladega Super Speedway in Las Vegas or the Daytona 500 bring in for fans. There's quite a few states that can take on these games and do it very well. At some point they'll probably award Las Vegas. All the athletes can get skunk drunk in the street, gamble their savings away and do the dirty deed all at the same time lol.

Boston was one of the finalist for this particular event, but I don't think this city could handle it. Despite the sports hub that it is, it's too small and a sudden influx of zillions of people would create a gridlock of epic proportions. In a way it's too bad, but it's for the better. We can always get on a plane and go see some of the events in a place much more capable of hosting such an awesome event.

Of all cities in the US it's Los Angeles that can handle the games without any big spending as most of the needed infrastructure is already in place. Yet 2028 is in 11 years which is a lot of time and the amazing city of LA will improve even more by then. Hope I can see Istanbul hosting it someday too.

Glad LA will host instead of Boston. LA has the space and infrastructure. Boston has neither. So I was surprised when USOC decided Boston would make an ideal city. Thankful it failed. It would've been a financial boondoggle if it was chosen.
