And as a note my brother has been to many Mediteranean countries. Him and his wife had no children [until last week] so they had plenty of time and are avid travellers. They have been to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco. Turkey is their number one choice in the Mediteranean. This is him in Morocco.

Then you have nationalism that is articulated in religion like Pakistan. This of course raises inherent contradictions which eventually start colliding and cause problems as you see in Pakistan. Nationalism just welded to religion creates very diffuse energy which gets splayed out and eventually starts tearing away with itself. For instance Pakistan is a state with legal boundaries but Islam extends well beyond it's borders. Therefore the citizens start subscribing to a trans-national abstraction creating terrible problems for a modern state. That is why Pakistan is often hostage to politics of the entire Muslim world. It is the place where all the Muslim world can come to vent their angst. Or it is the Muslim amphitheatre where the contestants from all over the Muslim world compete whereas the Pakistani state becomes hostage to this "contradiction" of trans-national Islam and national Pakistan.

I do not think Pakistan is hostage to the politics of the Muslim world.

Most Pakistanis do not care about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

I can honestly say Turks are one of the nicest people about. A dear and near to me was in Germany recently on education convention at Humboldt University for a week. She came back with a very positive opinion of Germans who displayed extreme good manners but her choice selection was for the Turks in Germany. She made many friends with Turkish Germans who took her to Turkish restaurents. She said she felt 100% at home with the Turkish females who had the perfect mix of western/eastern balance. That experiance has been the the factor in convincing us to choosing Turkey as our holiday destination this summer.

I pine for the day Pakistan takes the same trajectory as Turkey has. Really do.

Please don't cross out Istanbul from your plan...

Majority of our people are nice, but like all peoples we also have our not so nice people aswell. Glad your 'dear and near' had a pleasant time with Turks abroad

They are but nationalism has gotten a bad name because of the wars in last century in Europe. But the fact is nationalism is needed and a good thing. It is needed to move societies from tribal, clan, sectarian identities to a higher abstraction with legal underpinings. That is a modern nation state which 'purchases' the loyality of individuals in return for offering institutional rights and services. Turkey has been succesful in using nationalism to weld Anatolia together although there are issues with Kurds. Compare Anatolia to the neighbouring Syria or Iraq or even Libya which have cracked open exposing the faultlines along religious, sectarian, ethnic, tribal, clan division making for chaos to explode on gargantuan scale.

Ya but Turkey basically suppressed non Turkish identities...is that not so...?

Have travelled to quite a few countries by now. My favourite by far is Turkey. Fell in love with Istanbul, the history, the culture, the food.
My friends who I travelled with were third generation British Pakistanis and therefore identified as British whenever a Turk would enquire where we were from. I would then step in and say Pakistani and immediately the locals faces would turn from confusion to smiles followed by many welcomes and "kardesh". Can frankly say its the only country where saying you are Pakistani gets you smiles haha

Go for it. You won't regret it. See so many Pakistanis going Thailand, UAE etc. Nothing wrong with that of course one should travel everywhere but Istanbul would be on the very top of my list honestly if I were a Pakistani making a decision where I want to spend a foreign holiday.
