ISRO GSLV MkIII-M1 / Chandrayānam-2 (Chandrayaan-2) Mission: July 15, 2019

Chandrayaan-2 mission was a highly complex mission, which represented a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions of ISRO, which brought together an Orbiter, Lander and Rover to explore the unexplored south pole of the Moon. Since the launch of Chandrayaan-2 on July 22, 2019, not only India but the whole world watched its progress from one phase to the next with great expectations and excitement. This was a unique mission which aimed at studying not just one area of the Moon but all the areas combining the exosphere, the surface as well as the sub-surface of the moon in a single mission. The Orbiter has already been placed in its intended orbit around the Moon and shall enrich our understanding of the moon’s evolution and mapping of the minerals and water molecules in the Polar Regions, using its eight state-of-the-art scientific instruments. The Orbiter camera is the highest resolution camera (0.3m) in any lunar mission so far and shall provide high resolution images which will be immensely useful to the global scientific community. The precise launch and mission management has ensured a long life of almost 7 years instead of the planned one year. The Vikram Lander followed the planned descent trajectory from its orbit of 35 km to just below 2 km above the surface. All the systems and sensors of the Lander functioned excellently until this point and proved many new technologies such as variable thrust propulsion technology used in the Lander. The success criteria was defined for each and every phase of the mission and till date 90 to 95% of the mission objectives have been accomplished and will continue contribute to Lunar science , notwithstanding the loss of communication with the Lander.

Now Idian in here with excuse of moon landing is a complicated space mission therefore their scientist failure in their 1st tried of soft landing on the moon were highly anticipated, Indian themselves hinted at their scientists still need more time to revise their technological expertise in space exploration.

That is not what they preach before that. Their chief even brag they are on par with China space. They never even take a hint from the disaster of ESA/Russia and Israel ill fate soft landing of the difficulty of planet landing. They only think of how they celebrate and brag at rival once the soft landing successful landed. They may even think they pwned NASA.

Indian are trying to spin this as 99% success due to distance traveled. It's like someone never get promoted in job claim 99% success by claiming they at least sat on their butt all those years.

I am indeed a bit disappointed by the above statement from ISRO. Sure, they've made celestial orbital mechanics a routine job like PSLV launches with this mission, and sure, the precision is remarkable, but the statement is a bit escapist. Nobody but online trolls deny ISRO's excellence and strike rate, and thus owning up to the Lander's failure would take nothing away.

That said, efforts are still on to communicate with the Lander. I hope a more straightforward statement will be made later.

Mission 2A/2B and Mission 3A/3B had different objectives and dimensions, says ISRO official P.G. Diwakar.

The Mission 1, Mission 2, Mission 3 will “absolutely have no impact” on ISRO’s ambitious Indian Manned Space Mission scheduled to be launched, An Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) official said in Delhi on September 7.

Shri P.G. Diwakar, who was earlier Scientific Secretary at the space agency and is now the Director of Earth Observations Applications and Disaster Management Programme Office at the ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru, said both Mission 2A/2B and Mission 3A/3B had Different Objectives and Dimensions.

Zero impact

“There will be absolutely no problem at all. This will have no impact. The satellite missions as well as the human space flight mission will go very smoothly without any problem. Each mission is of a different type,” ISRO Chairman said.

Shri P.G. Diwakar Director of Earth Observations Applications and Disaster Management Programme Office at the ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru, however declined to comment on the reasons behind the Glitches faced during the landing in Mission 1A and completely kept Silent on Mission 2C and Mission 3C.

The Lander lost contact, just 2.1 km above the Surface in Mission 1C

The ISRO plans to send Indians Astronauts to space again, Prime Minister of Union Government of India, Shri Narendra Modi had announced during his last Independence Day speech.

Besides this, the ISRO will also launch Aditya L-1.

There are plans to build a space station and launch interplanetary missions to Mars, Venus and Moon.

Shri P.G. Diwakar Director of Earth Observations Applications and Disaster Management Programme Office at the ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru said Mission 1C had its own challenges while the other missions would have different objectives.

While the Mission 1C was meant for soft-landing of lander on the surface, Mission 2A/2B Mandate will be to send astronauts to space and bring them back to earth safely.

Meanwhile i heard, Lander had spotted on Moon and communication is being re-established while we are talking here. if indeed, then its a good news. Failure is hard but unavoidable in complex systems sometimes. But good luck for next time.

ISRO used NASA DSN only in blind spots. Otherwise it used Indian-DSN for moon missions and mars mission.

Consistency? They keep bragging about things when result is not out yet. They painted lies and insult rivals. This is a reality check and big slap on this bragger. They don't need encouragement and praise. They need more insult to stay humble. You are absolutely wrong.

It's unfortunately China's Yutu rover is not in the near vicinity otherwise it could assess the amount of damage Chandrayaan had sustained after the crash/landing. The photos from the Chinese rover could provide valuable data on the current state and if it is still operable under the damaged condition if it did crash in the first place. Lets hope to hear more news about its fate now that some sort of communication link has been established.

thank God Chinese Rover wasn't in the vicinity, Indian uncontrollable lander could have landed onto the Chinese rover and destroyed it.
