Israel launches cyber counter-attack against Iran

The amateurs in Iran tried to hack into Israel's civilian water system and disrupt water supply.
This is obviously a serious attack to mess with a country's water supply in a region where water is precious. The sick entity in Tehran were then hit with a proper cyber attack on Iran's ports.

A foreign government security official said the attack was "highly accurate" and the damage to the Iranian port was more serious than described in official Iranian accounts, the Post reported.

Israel is likely behind a cyberattack which halted traffic and caused "total disarray" at Iran's Shahid Rajaei Port, located near the Strait of Hormuz, last week, according to a report by The Washington Post.

On May 11, Mohammad Rastad, Managing Director of the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), announced that a cyberattack managed to damage a number of private systems at the Shahid Rajaei port.

Allah-Morad Afifi-Pour, Director-General of the PMO of Hormozgan province in southern Iran, had initially denied the reports of a cyberattack, but Rastad confirmed that a cyberattack had occurred in a press conference on Sunday, according to the Iranian Fars News Agency.

Rastad also confirmed that the attack was carried out by a foreign entity, according to Fars News Agency.

While Rastad stressed that operations had not been disrupted by the attack, US and foreign government officials told the Washington Post that traffic in the area came to a halt and was plagued with issues for a number of days.

Intelligence and cybersecurity officials familiar with the incident told the Post that the attack was carried out by "Israeli operatives," possibly in retaliation for an earlier cyberattack on Israel's civilian water system. A US official with access to classified files also told the Post that Israel was believed to have been behind the attack.

Satellite photographs showing miles-long traffic jams on highways leading the Shahid Rajaee port and dozens of loaded container ships waiting just off the coast were shown to the Post as well.

The cyberattack was "highly accurate," according to a security official with a foreign government that monitored the incident which reportedly occurred on May 9, two days before Iranian officials acknowledged it had occurred.

Israel, having so much influence over the US and having key positions over many global institutions is struggling with a sanctioned Iran. How can they even be involved in a cyber warfare against a sanctioned and embargoed nation is even a bigger question.

The Washington Post said on May 19 that the recent cyberattack against an Iranian port was carried out by Israel in retaliation for Iran's cyberattack against Israel's national water infrastructure, and, as reported by Israel Defense on May 15, is part of a new cyber war between the two countries.

According to the report, computers controlling the flow of trucks, goods and vessels at Shahid Rajaee terminal all crashed simultaneously on May 9, creating enormous backups of vehicle and shipping traffic. The terminal is located in the city of Bandar Abbas on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Intelligence sources were reported to have said that the assault was carried out by Israeli cyber actors. A foreign defense source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, was quoted as saying the attack was highly precise and caused much more serious damage than what Iran has admitted.

Dmitri Alperovitch, a founder of cyber security firm CrowdStrike, told the US newspaper that "Any time you see Iranian escalation, as with their buildup of rocket capacity in Syria, you have consistently seen Israeli retaliation with bombing runs on those positions. So it appears they have now applied that doctrine in cyberspace."

In a column by Israel Defense's Amir Rapaport on May 15, Arik Brabbing, former head of the Israel Security Agency's SigInt and Cyber Division, described how the incident could have widespread implications worldwide and could even be seen as the opening shot in a new type of war.

Making such statements is quite easy I am afraid. Iran officially said the attack was minor and the evidence shows this as well. The Iranian port is running without any issues and minus the claims by made Israel, there has been no signs of anything significant here.

In our news they said those were proxy servers, and the attack originated from Iran, and by the way it failed.

Anyways the point isn't about the Iranian attack, it's about the Israeli one.
