Well bombers themselves are classified I to tactical bombers and strategic bombers
Tactical is for attacking targets of military value and strategic is for attacking cities, system,industry to cripple the military production.

From IAF doctrine perspective, strategic bombers are never envisioned. But from the perspective of military campaigns that are presently undergoing or what has been done and dusted over last decade, the roles of strategic bombers is very very important.

What @egodoc222 was implying and what I understand is that in terms of economics of a war, the cost of a bomber, its operational cost, fuel, bombing payload, the air superiority cover, results etc vs a missile conventional does make it unattractive.

But efficacy of a bombing is surely there.. Most ppl don't know that in Afghanistan B1 and B2 did similar number of sorties. News showed always B2 stealth bomber doing ops mostly in daylight but it was B1 who did bulk sorties at night and who were always counted as the most impressive strike package based on HumInt.

Yes of course, that's why you have BMDs for longer range and close range support from systems like Pantsirs and TorM series and the AA batteries.
A famous quote is a intelligent Missile can block all legacy systems with ECM but you can't jam a gatling gun.

Yes of course. But the issue is such a takedown needs very advanced AD system like S400 types or you need first hand information about the bombers flight path leaked so that you can wait with your legacy system for an ambush. The issue in real terms is that number of successful sorties versus aircraft lost will put the ball purely in the bombers favour.

That's why you have specific SEAD mission for suppression of enemy air defenses so that bombers are not vulnerable and can fly slow and bomb the targets nice and easy

1. Strategic bomber was never outdated infact it has evolved with the time and now becoming stealthy and deadly from the truck load of bombs e.g Kindly Check Russian project PAK DA and US B-3 stategic bomber.and Chinese Development of long range Strategic Bombers.

2. Anything could be countered, but ever countermeasures have counter counter measures but one thing is clear, strategic bombers are not for the small airforce.

3. Strategic bombers are not an easy target because not only they have long range, could fly to extreme altitude, which outrange most of the interceptors, SAM, and Radars.

4. They are more stealthy. e.g B-2 Bomber though subsonic is very stealthy and almost invisible even for the 1 meter long frequency radar due to its sheer weight, and provides all aspect stealth from all directions.

5. Strategic bombers can prove very valuable for specific role and mission with high loteire time e.g B-52 could fly for 24 hours with 350 GPS guided JDAM which could be placed accurately with JSTAR/AWAAC.

Tactical Advantage
With the advancement of new technologies , Dump bombs could be converted into accurate GPS guided or Laser/radio guided bombs which could be dropped accurately without seeing the line of the target. Increase the range and reach of the existing weapons like cruise missiles.
P.S those who argue the cruise missiles are better options should check the range and the cost of the cruise missile with the range of thousands of KM and the deployment time of the platform that launches that weapons. In case of US, its bomber could fly from USA, get refuel in UK and then fly to IRAQ during Desert storm for the strategic mission say to kill Sadam Hussain whose movement and location changes quickly.

Strategic bomber could be used as the long range surveillance aircraft with offensive capabilities with the sensors depending on the mission.

Strategic Advantage

Strategic bomber gives another options for the Nuclear delivery system. Enemy have to keep an eye not only on the Ballastic missile, and cruise missiles launch and monitoring but also the stealth bombers.

Then you don't have any idea about these israeli. I was in J&K, when 4 israeli jews tourists 2 women and 2 male were abducted by 3 terrorist when they were in the House boat in Dal lake, Srinagar. Those 4 women and men decided to strike back and in the end, all 3 Pakistani terrorist got killed, with 1 israeli dead and 1 seriously injured. They did the right thing, otherwise all of them would have been killed. Moral of the Story all Israeli citizens are well trained, and have guts to face the extreme situations and highly motivated.
