Injured American Is 'Semi-Conscious'

JERUSALEM, March 16 -- An American injured last week during a demonstration near the West Bank village of Naalin remains in critical condition, still heavily sedated but breathing on his own, a hospital official said Monday.

Tristan Anderson, 37, was struck in the head Friday by a tear gas canister fired by an Israeli soldier during a Friday afternoon protest over the construction of an Israeli security barrier. "A full investigation will ensue," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The Californian has been removed from a respirator, and a spokesman for Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv said he was "semi-conscious" after days under full anesthesia. Anderson's associates and hospital and other officials said he was able to lift fingers on one hand in response to a voice command.

The barrier -- a high concrete wall in some places; a combination of wire fencing and roads in others -- surrounds much of the occupied West Bank. In recent months, protests against the barrier have broken out on a near weekly basis around Naalin. Four Palestinians, including two children, have been killed in the area since the summer, according to Sarit Michaeli, spokesman for the Israeli peace group B'Tselem, and dozens have been injured. The IDF says 73 border police officers and soldiers have been hurt by rocks and other objects thrown by Palestinian protesters in the area.

Anderson attended the demonstration as part of the International Solidarity Movement, a group that has clashed intermittently with Israeli authorities since it began operating in the West Bank and Gaza Strip several years ago. Two of its members have been killed -- American Rachel Corrie and British citizen Tom Hurndall, both in the Gaza Strip -- and another protester suffered serious wounds. Corrie was killed by an Army bulldozer in what Israeli officials concluded was an accident; Hurndall was shot by an Israeli soldier who was convicted of manslaughter.

Israeli officials have accused the group of blurring the line between legitimate protest and involvement with those intent on violence. A wanted member of the armed Islamic Jihad organization, for example, was arrested at the group's offices in Jenin in 2003.

Adam Taylor, a spokesman for the organization, said the group is committed to nonviolence and sends volunteers to disputed areas such as Naalin "to try and lessen the risks for the Palestinians," working on the assumption that Israeli army and police forces will temper their response to demonstrations if they know that foreign nationals are present. There are currently about 30 ISM volunteers in Nablus, Hebron and other places, he said.

IMHO, non-violent protests such as this, including westerners to garner western media coverage, are the best way to counteract the Israeli lobby in the US and Europe. Funding for organizations that sponsor such activities may be the most cost effective way to change Israeli policies.

They have killed even UN officials what do you expect from them. Injuring American is not a big deal for them.

How do you know how I felt about the Gazans killed? I guess you edited your reply. The point is to make the American media pay attention. Israeli killing and injuring Americans might get some attention over here. We can hope. Of course, the USS Liberty didn't cause a ripple ......

Look! Christians must save Israel because Bible/Jesus said so! That's what i hear from my religious American friends :D.

The problem is that the entire American community, black, white, red, yellow all, have been economically and psychologically hijacked by the Zionists who control more than 95% of the banking system, educational institutions and mass media...

It is true that many "fundamentalist" Christians think this. Probably about 10% of American Christians would fall into this category. Most Christians, however, are indifferent to saving either Jews in general or Israel in particular. However, they have been convinced (by the Jewish voices in western communications media and government) that Israel is an underdog and will be wiped out if the US doesn't protect them. The US supports Israel to avoid the "guilt" of allowing a 2nd holocaust.

I totally agree with you except for the "banking" part. Banking is kaput anyway. Jewish influence controls American foreign policy with respect to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict through all the communications outlets, both entertainment and news, academia, including think tanks, and by hugely disproportionate numbers of Jewish elected officials and political contributions to non-Jewish politicians.

Well my American bro, what you say about the holocaust that caused by Zionist in Gaza? Aren't Palestinian human enough and deserve protection from Zionist Israel? How about we peruse unbiased foreign policy for once and give peace a chance...

How do you know "it should have been an accident"??Were you present there?Or did you forget your Indian troops serving UN missions killed by Israeli bombs?

There are ways to make things look like accidents. You just have to differentiate between them.

Why would Israeli government deliberately attack a "foreign national"(no need to be Ammerican ). Friend even if its a protester from Iran they will respect them and show them the hospitality , that what every country does :)
