Israel Chief of Staff Concludes Visit to India

Lt. Gabi Ashkenazi will end his visit today which is meant to strengthen and enhance their military ties, especially in R&D defense projects, counterterrorism and intelligence-sharing.
Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, ends today (Thursday, Dec. 10) his working visit to India. The Chief of the General Staff received an honorary guard at the Indian military headquarters in New Delhi. Later, he met with Indian government, security and military officials, which included his Indian counterpart, Chief of Army Staff to the Indian Army, General Deepak Kapoor, who recently held a work visit in Israel.
As noted, the Chief of the General Staff met with a number of security and government officials, including the National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and the chiefs of Indian Navy and Air Force. Today, he will visit the South-Western Army Command. At the end of today, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi will return to Israel.
Chief of the General Staff's visit received media coverage in major media outlets in India. The most popular newspaper "Times of India" wrote this morning that the two countries decided to strengthen and enhance their already expansive military ties, especially in areas like research and development defense projects, counterterrorism and intelligence-sharing.
The Indian Army is comprised of over a million soldiers and has been dealing with security challenges, internal and external, the most problematic being with the border neighboring Pakistan. According to reports in India, they have purchased from Israel a wide array of weapons systems, ranging from air defense and electronic warfare systems. It was also reported that Israel is one of India's largest defense suppliers, reaching up till now a worth of about nine billion dollars.
