they are held at high esteem among the American public and rightly so. they are considered to be special forces just like rangers and 101 airborne.
the Marines lead the ground assaults, you will hardly read or hear the mention of the US army, they seem to be pretty much relegated to the the kind of a job our Scouts or Janbaaz force has (well that seems to be the impression)

Well, Marines do rank lower than the Army.

Mostly High School grads join the Marines, while the Army is comprised of college as well as university grads (same is the case with Air Force).

I do not know where you get this impression. The officer cadre in all three services are all college graduates. The Grunts, Jar Heads etc. are high school graduates -- min. This is the case both in the Army and the Marines.

The National Guard is different -- they are the weekend soldiers. They do have amongst their ranks G.I.'s that are working on their College degrees and in some cases have college degrees and continue to serve as soldiers or specialists out of sheer patriotism. Those servicemen who are in the Guard are protected by law to take time off their jobs each year to attend specialist camps and courses while giving atleast one weekend per month to the Guard.

There is a simillar program for the Marines, Navy and the Air Guard. Trust me, there are no more or less college grads in the Army than say the Navy or the Marines, percentage wise.
