ISPR dismisses 'rumours' regarding appointments on senior military posts

The military’s media wing on Monday dismissed “rumours” circulating on local media regarding the postings on senior military posts, after Radio Pakistan had earlier reported the appointment of Lt Gen Amir Riaz as Chief of General Staff and Lt Gen Shahid Baig as Corps Commander Southern Command.

Inter-Services Public Relations chief Lt Gen Asim Bajwa tweeted the denial, saying any postings or promotions of senior military officers being circulated on local media and social media were "untrue and rumour mongering".

"We will update whenever decided," he stressed.

Radio Pakistan had earlier reported that Corps Commander Southern Command Lieutenant General Amir Riaz has been appointed as Chief of General Staff.

The post of Chief of General Staff fell vacant following the promotion ofGeneral Zubair Mahmood Hayat.

Military Secretary Lieutenant General Shahid Baig Mirza has been appointed as Corps Commander Southern Command, the report added.

Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat took over as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) on Monday from the outgoing chairman General Rashad Mehmood during an official ceremony at the joint staff headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Gen Hayat, who has become the 17th CJCSC of Pakistan, was presented with a guard of honour at a ceremony attended by all chiefs of staff, including outgoing army chief Gen Raheel Sharif. Incoming army chief Gen Qamar Javad Bajwa was also present on the occasion.

Theoretically, the CJCSC has to be the senior-most four-star officer from any of the three services — army, navy and air force.

However, since the establishment of the National Command Authority (NCA), the army has staked a claim to its leadership, because it controls the key areas of nuclear command and strategic assets.

The CJCSC is also the deputy chairman of NCA’s deployment committee, which is headed by the prime minister.

How did Radio Pakistan share this news? There are only two possibilities... Either news of these postings was true, tht is, Gen Amir riaz being made CGS, and Gen shahid Baig Mirza being made comm southern command, and tht army wants to confirm it, once new COAS formally takes charge,,, or the news is completely false.. Either ways, how did Radio Pak release this news? If this news, is true, how did they come to know of it, or most importantly why did they share something, which army hasnt released officially? Why did they share unffoicial news?Or other possibility..why did Radio Pakistan lie..or give wrong/false info? Like dawn leaks... What the hell is happening here? First someone shares false info to media, reg NSC meeting to Dawn, and now info from CC conference..whether true or false? What is Maryam Nawaz media cell upto? Still havent learnt any lesson from dawn leaks... This is what i have been saying all along... You wont punish them on dawn, they will keep getting bolder and will keep planning mischief... Better act even NOW

Don't know what's happening. In normal circumstances, it could be termed as "unintentional error and misreporting without malice". But the way things are moving, PA must investigate all the issues pertinent to misreporting and consider them malicious.

But the thing is, they probably decided to promote General Amir Riaz. The notification wasn't issued formally. How on earth the news came out? And now will they promote him? The person who did that definitely didn't want Gen. Amir to be promoted in my opinion.

Anyway, it's really bad for Pakistan and Pakistan Army. Nawaz government is trying to create internal rifts through these cheap tactics.

But even, I am at a loss......at whats happening.... Even i think, most probably, its tht it was decided to post him as CGS..but formal notification was not made...but then how did Radio Pakistan come to know of it? Why did they report it? It can also be..tht it was almost decided tht it will be done..and someone shared it to the media..thinking its done already..but notification still had not been issued... BUT..in this case..if it was decided already..WHY did ISPR deny it..and say its untrue and rumor mongering? All army had to do ...was issue a formal notification and no one would have even noticed anything wrong... Afterall, radio pakistan is also an official source and it could be safely assumed..tht army itself shared the news and aftewards issued a formal notification..

WHY deny it? Means..the news could be untrue, as ISPR has said for now.. Then who is planting false stories of CC conferences, like dawn leaks?

Another thing...while I was happy at this announcement, of Gen Amir Riaz being made CGS....i dont think much time has passed, since him becoming commander Southern command.. I think Gen Nasir Janjua, retired, somewhere like in sep / oct 2015, if i remember correctly..and Gen Amir Riaz came in as his replacement... Correct me , if am wrong.. Do u think, army will change corp Comm balochistan, just after almost one year? Arent corps commander not posted elsewhere, after atleast 2 years, in their position? As Balochistan is such an important province...why would they change Gen Amir Riaz so soon? I know CGS is a very important and prestigious position, but would Gen Amir Riaz still be changed after just over an yr in balochistan? But this is again my own assumption, and could be wrong totally.... Maybe army had really decided to post him as CGS..but why deny then? Why not just issue a formal notification?

Shahid Masood had said, tht maybe Gen RS, doing these important postings, on last day of his office..which is very unsual.....army wanted to give the message, tht even though change of command is taking place, army's policies will remain same... Ofcourse, he would have trusted radio pakistan as everyone else.... But now denial comes from ispr.. Seriously dont know..whats happening...
