ISLAMABAD: Australia has announced that it is ready to cooperate with Pakistan in a host of sectors ranging from energy to agriculture.

Australian High Commissioner Margaret Adamson, while talking to business community at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), said her country would assist Pakistan in a number of sectors including agriculture development, energy, exploration of natural resources, information technology (IT), health, education and value chain to boost its economic profile.

Consumers start looking for more gas supplies than oil

She said Pakistan was in the driving seat in the information technology sector globally with a young and talented pool of IT professionals and the area had great potential for cooperation between the two countries, a statement quoted the high commissioner as saying.

Adamson pointed out that water conservation and its optimum utilisation was another area of great interest as both countries could face water shortage. “A strong cooperation could help Pakistan and Australia to cope with this challenge more effectively.”

She called Pakistan a strong market of 200 million people with abundant natural resources while Australia had advanced technology and expertise in many fields, so both had a good potential to complement each other in many areas.

She was of the view that Pakistan’s profile as an investment destination should be further raised in order to attract more Australian investment.

She saw great opportunities in the region for business and investment and said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was vital to strengthening regional connectivity and promoting regional integration.

Adamson suggested that Australia could supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan to address its energy challenges and assured businessmen that Australia would continue to work with Pakistan in agriculture, energy, health, education and other sectors to strengthen its economy.

Pakistan, Qatar sign $16 billion LNG deal

ICCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh, while citing $485 million worth of bilateral trade in 2014-15, said it was far less than the real potential and proposed the two countries should focus on exchange of trade delegations regularly to identify new avenues of cooperation.

He asked Australia to share its advanced agro-technology, expertise and quality seeds, which would lead to improvement in productivity and quality of agricultural products in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that five more liquefied natural gas-based agreements will be signed with Qatar after the government inked a $16-billion deal for gas import a day ago.

Talking to Voice of America on Thursday, he said Pakistan had been passing through a severe energy crisis and LNG import from Qatar would be a positive and welcome step to address the issue.

Pakistan, Qatar sign $16 billion LNG deal

The two countries have signed three other agreements and memoranda of understanding for cooperation in the fields of radio, television, health and academic research.

Abbasi pointed out that 50% of Pakistan’s energy needs depended on energy produced by gas and LNG import from Qatar had started partially, but the gas was given to consumers on the basis of their need.

Under the agreement with Qatar, three LNG-carrying ships would reach Pakistan every month this year and next, he said, adding the number of vessels would increase to five after 2017.

Responding to a question, the minister said Pakistan had been facing energy crisis for the past several years due to which not only domestic consumers but also the national economy suffered badly.

Pakistan finalises $21b LNG deal with Qatar

In his remarks, Sui Southern Gas Company former general manager Brigadier (Retired) Agha Gul noted that the process of LNG purchases from Qatar had been going on from 2004. Talking to Voice of America, Gul stressed that people who had some knowhow of the energy crisis would consider the LNG import project as light at the end of the tunnel.

The deal has come at a time when oil prices stand at sharply lower levels in the international market, which would have a good impact.

Pakistan should seriously pursue this, if financially affordable. The wider the supply sources, the less chances of political pressure being applied to Pakistan.

.
Considering we have pipeline from Central Asia and Iran also in works
The gas from Australia might be additional plus

Partnership in the Agricultural sector is something that would be positive plus

That Pakistanis are thinking on whether they are isolated is itself a big victory for Modi's approach with Pakistan.

On topic, the world is a small place. Isolating a country is hard. Even North Korea is not isolated.

Ausie gas is at ridiculous high prices. I doubt they can offer anything better than Qatar. Ausie energy companies are in crunch right now

Enjoy the victory while we'll make deals thinking that we're isolated.
Victory for both of us

It is not that simple. India will be the big elephant in the negotiating room. Countries have to balance their relationship with India vs Pakistan. So your deals are not independent of India.
