World View: Fears Grow of Shia Revenge Killings in Iraq

So today a massive Shia army, under Iranian command, is entering Saddam Hussein’s home town, to expel ISIS and take control. As one analyst asked, will the Sunni people of Tikrit treat the Shia army to be liberators or invaders?

According to US Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, testifying before Congress on Wednesday:

We are all concerned about what happens after the drums stop beating and ISIL is defeated, and whether the government of Iraq will remain on a path to provide an inclusive government for all of the various groups within it. […]

There’s no doubt that the combination of the Popular Mobilization forces and the Iraqi security forces, they’re going to run ISIL out of Tikrit.

Fears of Shia on Sunni atrocities and retribution will not be unexpected. According to an Amnesty International report published last year in October:

In recent months, Shi’a militias have been abducting and killing Sunni civilian men in Baghdad and around the country. These militias, often armed and backed by the government of Iraq, continue to operate with varying degrees of cooperation from government forces – ranging from tacit consent to coordinated, or even joint, operations. For these reasons, Amnesty International holds the government of Iraq largely responsible for the serious human rights abuses, including war crimes, committed by these militias.

The victims were abducted from their homes, workplace or from checkpoints. Many were later found dead, usually handcuffed and shot in the back of the head. Reports by families of the victims and witnesses have been corroborated by Ministry of Health workers, who told Amnesty International that in recent months they have received scores of bodies of unidentified men with gunshot wounds to the head and often with their hands bound together with metal or plastic handcuffs, rope or cloth. Photographs of several bodies shown to Amnesty International by victims’ relatives and others viewed at Baghdad’s morgue, reveal a consistent pattern of deliberate, execution-style killings.

Some of the victims were killed even after their families had paid hefty ransoms. Several families told Amnesty International how they had received the dreaded call from the kidnappers, had searched frantically for the ransom money and had managed to pay it, only to discover that their loved one had still been killed. “I begged friends and acquaintances to lend me the ransom money to save my son, but after I paid they killed him and now I have no way to pay back the money I borrowed, as my son was the only one working in the family”, a grieving mother told Amnesty International.

Shiite Militias Kill Sunni Civilians in Iraq as Revenge for ISIS Attacks

The Iraqi military has had little success battling ISIS, but according to a new report from Amnesty International, another armed force backed by the Iraqi government is apparently killing Sunni civilians as retaliation for ISIS attacks.

In a report released Tuesday, Amnesty International charged that government-backed Shiite militias have been abducting and killing Sunni Muslim civilians without any interference from the Iraqi government. The abductions increased after the Iraqi Army, on the run from ISIS, abandoned a third of the country and the Shiite militias filled the power void, it said.

Some of the kidnappings are done to extract ransom from families, a mirror of a fundraising method widely used by ISIS, but other abductions and killings have come within hours of ISIS attacks on Shiite civilians and neighborhoods. ISIS, a radical Sunni group, has also destroyed Shia holy sites.

“Shia militias,” said the report, “have been taking advantage of the atmosphere of lawlessness and impunity to abduct and kill Sunni men, seemingly in reprisal or revenge for [ISIS] attacks and at times also to extort money from the families of those they have abducted.”

On June 6, according to interviews conducted by Amnesty, the day after an ISIS incursion into Samarra, 37 Sunni men were abducted and killed from the city’s eastern neighborhoods.

In Kirkuk on Aug. 24, the day after a triple bomb attack by ISIS, three young Sunni men were abducted. They were later found shot in the back of the head with their hands tied behind their backs. the report said.

“These militias, often armed and backed by the government of Iraq,” said the report, “continue to operate with varying degrees of cooperation from government forces -- ranging from tacit consent to coordinated, or even joint, operations.”

“For these reasons, Amnesty International holds the government of Iraq largely responsible for the serious human rights abuses, including war crimes, committed by these militias.”

Hundreds of thousands of russian troops and weaponry only resulted in Russia leaving Afghanistan with its tail tucked between its legs

Hundreds of thousands of troops and billions of U.S and Nato money and weapons didn't get rid of Taliban or AQ

Instead the problem has spread with the wars fueling extremism far and wide

So why would 0 Russian troops and a handful of Russian jets suddenly defeat ISIS?

wow..such an effective mission by Russia in such a short space of time?
So what's the West. the US & their allies been doing until now? Playing good IS & bad IS?

And what proof is this effective mission? Russians just have to say something and people believe it because of their anti western bias, hilarious.

I do think though that IS numbers are extremely exaggerated and spread very thin, of course a ground invasion will destroy them in a few days, the US and the UK destroyed Iraqs military in a week and barely lost a few men.

Iraq conflict: Shiite gunmen kill more than 70 Sunni worshippers at mosque in Diyala province - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Iraq conflict: Shiite gunmen kill more than 70 Sunni worshippers at mosque in Diyala province

Suspected Shiite gunmen have killed more than 70 worshippers at a Sunni mosque in Iraq's eastern Diyala province.

The attack is believed to have been carried out in revenge for a bombing that killed several Shiite fighters.

Lawmaker Nahida al-Dayani, who is from Diyala, said about 150 worshippers were at Imam Wais mosque when the militiamen arrived after a roadside bombing that targeted a security vehicle.

"It is a new massacre," said Ms Dayani.

"Sectarian militias entered and opened fire at worshippers. Most mosques have no security.

"Some of the victims were from one family. Some women who rushed to see the fate of their relatives at the mosque were killed."

An army major who declined to be identified said the gunmen arrived in two pickup trucks after two bombs had gone off at the house of a Shiite militia leader, killing three of his men.

A Sunni tribal leader, Salman al-Jibouri, says his community will respond.

"Sunni tribes have been alerted to avenge the killings," he said.

Two influential Sunni politicians, deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq and parliament speaker Salim al-Jibouri, suspended talks with the main Shiite political alliance to form a new government.

The attack is a setback for prime minister-designate Haider al-Abadi, from the majority Shiite community, who is seeking support from Sunnis and ethnic Kurds to take on the Islamic State (IS) insurgency threatening to tear Iraq apart.

Man stoned to death in northern Iraq
In the northern city of Mosul, IS stoned a man to death, witnesses said, as the United States raised the prospect of tackling jihadist safe havens across the border in Syria.

IS, which this week released a video showing the beheading of American journalist James Foley, stoned the man to death in Mosul after one of its self-appointed courts sentenced him for adultery, the witnesses said.

In a regional conflict which is throwing up dilemmas for governments from Washington to London to Baghdad and Tehran, any US action against IS in Syria would risk making common cause with president Bashar al-Assad – the man it has wanted overthrown in a three-year uprising.

Having poured in from Syria across a desert border that it does not recognise, the movement has declared its own caliphate.

IS is the most powerful rebel group fighting Mr Assad's forces in Syria's civil war, which the United Nations said has claimed almost 200,000 lives.

At least 191,369 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict up to April, more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an underestimate, the UN human rights office said on Friday.

oldman is here for showing some propaganda
not ashamed they support the sponsor of terrorism in the region, not ashamed they do very little to fight ISIS, complaining Russia is doing the job
managing to discuss with the sponsors of terrorism AND selling them weapons
not ashamed these weapons kill massively yemeni population

very sad indeed
i like very very much your country and values oldman but your attitude is a SHAME to humanity

and your own attitude trying to put the shias and sunnis against each other
and the unhonesty to the core to say sunni=isis
wow
that sucks very very much

.
This guy tried hard then came up with news that not confirmed!! actually shiite are the one who ask for investigating that attack on sunni mosque.

But Question Mr, old man why and how come your media support sunnis in Iraq and Syria why your media struggle to find any thing to blame the shiite.

any way we shiite wont commit mass killing to innocents otherwise trust me these sunnis in Iraq wont stay there if we decide any day to do so and you'll see millions of them on the border of erdogan and trust me no one can help them at all that time but as I said we re far from such genuicide crimes.

.
Might be true except that the people they send to wipe them out get wiped out in minutes instead.

I don't need to try hard. The UN has already pointed out that Sunnis and Shiites are killing each other. You already have Sunnis not liking the Shiites and suspecting them for doing it. Not blaming on lets say Mossad or CIA which many like to use. And Sunnis are determined fighters as you have seen. After all you pointed out Sunnis are supporters of ISIS and can defend itself against Shiites. The news media doesn't need to struggle to blame the Shiites. The Shiites are making it easy to be blamed.
