ISIS claims it has operations inside Bangladesh
Tribune Online Report

IS-Dabiq-2.jpg

IS claims the persons in the photo published in Dabiq are members of its Bangladesh unit.

ISIS has claimed it has operations in Bangladesh, BuzzFeed News reported citing the latest issue of Dabiq, the propaganda magazine of the Islamic militant group.

A significant part of the issue of the magazine was devoted to discuss its operations in Bangladesh.

A number of secular bloggers have been killed in Bangladesh in hand of Islamist fundamentalists since last year.

However, the government has repeatedly rejected the idea of existence and operation of the global militant outfit in the country.

The latest issue, released online on Wednesday, includes a profile of a young Bangladeshi named Abu Jandal al-Bangali who was killed during a battle in Ayn Issa, northern Syria.

Abu Jandal, it says, was a man who came from an affluent family in the capital city of Dhaka and had military connections.

He was, it says, a passionate jihadi who immediately signed up for martyrdom operation after joining the ISIS training camp in Syria and deeply cared about jihad in his homeland.

Dabiq also published a short letter by Abu Jandal addressed to “brothers in Islam,” whom he encouraged to be prepared to join ISIS. “Try to do regular physical exercise at home,” the letter said. “Don’t skip this point.”

Dabiq said Abu Janda al-Bangali came from Bangladesh to Syria and was killed during an operation.

ISIS devotes the last few pages of the magazine to an interview with Sheikh Abu Ibrahim al-Hanif, the man it says is leading its operation in Bangladesh (referred to as “Bengal” throughout the interview).

In the interview, Abu Ibrahim says Muslims in the region, especially those in Burma, live under oppression from Buddhists and Hindus. The group hopes to strengthen its jihad within Bangladesh before moving into Burma.

“We believe the shariah in Bengal won’t be achieved until the local Hindus are targeted in mass numbers,” he says in the interview.

He is also critical of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s largest Islamist political party, for not implementing the “law of Allah” during its time in power from 2001 to 2006.

Abu Ibrahim says Bangladesh is important for global jihad because of its geographic position and proximity to India. “Having a strong jihad base in Bengal will facilitate guerilla attacks inside India simultaneously from both sides [east and west],” he says in the interview.

Last year, three bombs ripped through Dhaka’s old quarter during a procession marking the Shiite holiday of Ashura, killing a teenager and wounding more than 100 people. It was the first time Shiite Muslims have been targeted in Bangladesh. The attack came less than a month after an Italian aid worker was shot dead while jogging in the diplomatic area of Dhaka.

A Japanese man was also killed in Rangpur district, in northern Bangladesh. ISIS claimed responsibility for both the bombing and the targeted killing of foreign nationals, saying “citizens of the crusader coalition” will not be safe in Muslim lands. In February, ISIS claimed responsibility for the killing of a Hindu priest who was beheaded at a temple in northern Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s government has repeatedly said ISIS doesn’t operate inside the country, but police last year said to have detained several sympathizers affiliated with Ansarullah Bangla Team, a small extremist outfit that has been linked to a bank heist and the bloggers’ murders, and is reported to have ties to both al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Please tell me the border fencing along the Indo-BD border is being expedited, this is going to become another frontier in India's fight against terror, just like the LoC.
the nutshell is actually India based like Assam, West Bengal etc

It remains an extremely porous border, in many places people make 'foreign trips' while brushing teeth....literally!

This is going to come back to bite India one way or another either it will have a stream of terrorists coming in from the Eastern side or the economic disparity will drive so many migrants into India so as to make the Mexico/US issues seem trivial or both scenerios will happen.

Bloody hell mate, chill out - it's one small group of nobodies talking shxx to pass time and you're ready to build hadrians wall.

We had a Jamaat coalition government 10 years ago, if you weren't invaded then you won't be now. The terrorists you need to worry about are all home grown.

I thought the fencing of border is continuing at a fast space and is also being upgraded in many parts.

It will accelerate even more hopefully if BJP wins Assam elections hopefully.

I for one am not so worried about the Islamist ISIS angle that much. With BAL in power, Indian intelligence proxies have permeated Bangladesh very effectively.....ISIS will have a difficult time finding any secure hiding place. Radicalised areas and elements are already well known to BAL.

The fencing from Indian side is more of an urgent economic+demographic matter to me.

From what I see BD is descending into anarchy (my perception, it could be misplaced) but no matter what the threat of economic migration is only going to grow for India as the economic disparity grows between India and the rest of the region. It's better to tackle these issues now then down the road and face a Mexcio-US situation (which is a total mess).

Exactly right (in the long term) but I hope this sort of thing wakes up the Indian establishment to step up their efforts along all Indian borders.

What is the plan of global intelligence agencies against BD? Seems like something brewing up. Gullible people will still fall in their traps. It sounds farce. What some Indian newspapers were talking some days back, dabiq refuting the same thing after a month what a coincidence and Indian W Bengal and Assam going through voting time.

Global intelligence agencies have delegated everything that may matter regarding Bangladesh....to India (RAW).

Hence the exposing of the ISI money laundering + other ISI activites, ISIS/JEI/Jamaati radical activities + clamping down of more pressing concerns from India perspective (ULFA, Border cartels, smuggling rackets etc).

Bangladesh footprint on the world is minimal from security standpoint, it only has the potential to affect India (border areas mostly) and internally (banian supply for world is not a huge priority globally but keeping 160 million mostly muslim people peaceable and controlled in such a small area is important, thankfully the default nature of Bengali people helps).

Let me dispell some very long held myths about immigration between India and Bd.

Bangladesh is the 5th largest source of remittances to India in the world.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/alyssaayres/2014/02/26/indias-stakes-in-the-middle-east/#1eb370a363b9

On the other hand, remittance from India to BD is negligible.

https://www.bb.org.bd/econdata/wagermidtl.php

Bdeshis are one of the top 10 strongest remitters in the world, wherever we go we send money home.

http://www.dhakatribune.com/business/2015/apr/20/remittance-inflow-see-record-high-2015

So why is it that if there are "millions" of Bangladeshis in India, they send almost nothing back?

Then again, which country is our number one remittance recipient? You guessed it, India.

It's impossible to have any kind of statistical debate about Bdeshi immigration becuase Indian claimed stats have fluctuated wildly over the years. The numbers claimed by successive govts have been self serving. The remittance numbers, however, do not lie.

I can tell you first hand, Bangladesh is home to countless Indians. All IT, engineering, medical even garment sectors are riddled. Indian firms are investing hugely in Bd and sending in their own teams. So tell me who should be more worried - you or us? You are very fortunate that you have Bangladeshi neighbours. We don't begrudge visitors coming to our country to work.
