Is Venus humanity's next home?

This. Also, while the thick atmosphere does provide some protection, Venus additionally possesses an induced magnetosphere on the anti-solar half of the planet which would further protect from cosmic rays. With Venus' slow rotation, keeping a cloud city on the dark half of the planet would be easy. I envision a colony powered by thermal generators lowered into the hot abyss below it, rather than solar power, so I believe this would be feasible.

To get earth like gravity it will have to spin 3 million miles per hour, thats very fast.
The earth rotates at 1670 km/h at the equator and the speed varies as you move north or south. At the poles the speed is almost 0.
the premise of this animation is unrealistic and over-dramatic... as example, humans going to mars 500 years from now...
I have yet to see an anime with a realistic premise...it was meant to be a joke.

earth does not generate gravity with rotation...but with its mass.

Uffoo
I was talking about the ring world, I said "to achieve earth like gravity it (ring world) would have to spin 3 million miles per hour ". :)

isn't a "dyson sphere" meant to enclose a star?? and it is markus who keeps talking of artificial stars... :D
Hmm I read his post. I want to know more about the micro dyson hes talking about.

the typical american attitude is unnecessary complication... in politics, spaceships, weaponary, language, computing etc... they should see that a single temperature unit ( like how "byte" is in computing ) will clarify/simplify lot of things... and hopefully disconnect many many useless people from useless jobs and useless companies... :D:partay::D
Like I said, may be they still use it so that they dont have to change everything.Though somewhere deep inside me I do feel its their stubbornness to bring the change, their style of resisting change.

which is why i admire elon musk... he simplifies and therefore makes his spaceships reliable and more capable.
Hes coming up with tesla roadster.

i don't even know how much a mile is to a kilometer.
1.6 kms!! :)
You got the concept totally wrong. I´m not talking about a "classical" dyson sphere but a "micro dyson sphere. Such a construct would be the size of earth or slightly larger. It is hollow inside. The center contains an artificial "star" which can be powered with antimatter-matter annihilation.

ShieldWorldConstruction.jpg

same about ringworlds. Nobody needs a ring that circles an entire star. What is possible in far future would be a planetary ringworld which simply orbits a star. The rotation speed needed would be only 6 circles each day to generate enough centrifugal force to generate 1G when teh ring has a diameter of 10.000 km

Okay so you mean a dyson sphere of earth size with a star inside. True?
I dont think thats possible because no matter how small a star is, to provide light it has to be hotter and putting it within the sphere would increase the temperature of the sphere drastically.

But I would like to know more about the ring world that you're talking about. Because as I've mentioned already the ring world I had suggested has its issues.

1. i assume from the picture that people will live beneath the top surface.

2. how will you replicate earth's atmosphere in such a big artificial sphere.

3. how will you hold the star in the core.

4. will you allow the light from the star into the habitations.

5. how will you sustain the star.

6. how will you control the star's activity, because natural stars do become supernova at some point.

7. how will you ensure that the rotating sphere - which induces gravity - will not collapse the sphere into the star.

8. will this sphere be able to freely travel space.

to me the point of being in space is to travel, much of the time... with genetically-extended life and fast space-propulsion, for me is not sitting within a artificial construct revolving around a star.

I never said it does...@levina said that the ring would need to rotate at 3 million miles/h to mimic earth like gravity to which @jamahir replied: "i didn't know earth spins that fast". I was merely correcting this assumption that @jamahir might have had. Besides no object can generate gravity with rotation...simply the feeling of gravity due to centrifugal force.

Sure let me explain.

2. Just how you create the entire internal surface. Oceans, mountains, forests and simply a biosphere. You strip it from planets and uninhabitable planetoids and bring it there

3+4+5+6. It is not a real star. It is an artificial one. Its hold in place by a magnetic field and gets its power from annihilation between matter and antimatter. You can control the reaction. You can even shut it off by simply stopping the reaction.

7. The "artificial star" creates no gravity. It does not generate power through fusion but bases on annihilation

8. Yes but would be nonsense. It would be anchored in a existing system.

You don´t get the basic idea behind this. Too travel you need places to go. With such technology we can build our own worlds that fit us 100%. Make is absolutly independend. Evry planet would always be a compromise. But that way we crete our own habitats evrywhere. That way we can grow to gigantic numbers.

sure. Imagine a ring structure with a diameter if 10.000 km. Orbiting a star at a specific distance.

It rotates and with that generates gravity. half its surface is in shadow because the rotation which generates day and night. The biosphere is located on the inside:

Carl Sagan said this is the "most practicable" form of a biosphere megastructure. If we master this the next station would be a micro dyson sphere.

okay, like how plasma is confined within the iter reactor or within the vasimr engine... and like what they showed in the film "angels and demons".

but like xenoensi said, there is no need of artificial stars, advancement in led lamps will provide full-spectrum lighting... as for electricity generation, look at my mention of "stirling engines" above and the points i wrote with that... nuclear electricity seems obsolete to me.

unless a construction is a spaceship and not a natural rock foundation, what is the point of the construction... i earlier spoke of a town within a spinning asteroid because the asteroid can be a big spaceship which can travel, and arrive near a bigger world which can be or has been terraformed, or just for exploration or mining.

i don't like the idea of "ring worlds" or "dyson spheres"... they are pointless.

Too travel you need places to go.

places to go are found by travel... otherwise it would be like present-day space stations, be it salyut, be it iss... we have been hanging in low earth orbit for 40 years.

With such technology we can build our own worlds that fit us 100%.

that anyway can be done by digging into big asteroids.

Evry planet would always be a compromise.

That way we can grow to gigantic numbers.

in human population, i want only the females to grow in gigantic numbers... minimal male population is essential to keep the males disciplined and focus on the natural male ability ( at least in some males ) ( is truth, @levina :agree: ) to innovate, challenge, explore, invent... and more females means... heh heh heh

Carl Sagan said this is the "most practicable" form of a biosphere megastructure.

well, carl sagan is wrong... we should not deviate from living closely with nature, in a socialist/spiritual/gentle/thoughtful manner... i find cell phones unnecessary, leave alone "ring worlds".

It is pointless for you because you don´t get the point. You obviously don´t understand the concept of a world that suits us 100% in evry detail and a terraformed planet that always lacks in something behind. Since you lack this very basic understanding this debate is senseless from the beginning. You obviously live in your car since a house can´t travel.

Let me explain it easier for you.

A terraformed planet is the technologiocal level of this:

a ringworld or microdyson sphere is this:

Burj-Khalifa-at-night.jpg

That you bring up "hollow asteroids" for comparission is plain and simple laughable. The largest asteroids do not grow bigger than 500km. I´m talking about structures with a 10.000 km diameter.

i find the burj khalifa a useless and faddish monument to consumerism... i prefer classic two-storey buildings set in a garden... you had posted a picture of a beautiful mall in italy which was like a arab souk... now that was elegance.

you think 10,000 km structures means sophistication... obviously you play video games.

I dont think Hawking and Sagan play / played much video games. Terraforming is always a bad alternative and you never end up with a world that is like ours. You are never independend and you are never able to build up a living space near the really interesting areas of space.

you are never able to build up a living space near the really interesting areas of space.

interesting areas?? you want to build a ring-word or dyson-sphere near some star... and never want to step foot on a natural world, never want to travel... i don't understand you.

interesting areas?? you want to build a ring-word or dyson-sphere near some star... and never want to step foot on a natural world, never want to travel... i don't understand you.

because your mind is too small for this concept.

When you visit the beach or mountains you usually don´t sleep on the mountain tops. You sleep in a city. A constructed city. The planetary system is the environment. The ringworld and micro dyson sphere the city. For travel you use ships and airplanes. You don´t live in them.

Also good luck in finding a planet you can terraform in the galactic bulge.

Also you know what happenes when you lived one year on your terraformed mars and i come from earth or my ringworld and start a fight with you? I can grab you by the neck and throw you 40 meters wide.

With a microdyson sphere or ringworld we can settle in evry single star system of this galaxy. Thats whats real independence is. Even the most exotic systems can be settled then.

I would step my food on other worlds. To colonize and use them. The most suitable can be terraformed. The not useable ones can be used as rescources for our own constructed worlds.

Take our own solar system and imagine it without earth. Not one planet would be suitable to be a 1:1 copy of earth.

What rescources would you need to construct a ringworld with 10.000 km diameter?

Just the metals from mercury for the construction. And only a small moon from Saturn to bring in the water for the oceans, lakes and seas.
