What's new

Is there any regional cooperation to combat climate change and droughts?

Saudi Arabia is a country without a river
that was not always the case as we hade jungle in central Iran several hundred years ago or the central iran had no desert around 1-2 thousand year ago and was filled with animals . and just a millennium ago in places that today we have salt and desert there was lakes .
the situation in the middle east was not always such , where ever in middle east deserts you look you find traces of some thriving civilization

Saudi Arabia is a country without a river

No permanent rivers, but 100's (if not 1000's) of wadis (seasonal rivers that are rivers most of the year outside of the 4 summer months).

Not only that, KSA has the regions largest acquirers and KSA is one of the regions largest agricultural exporters while having self-sufficiency when it comes to most corps.

Saudi Arabia plants over 12m trees to reverse desertification

Saudi Arabia has planted more than 12 million wild trees and shrubs in a bid to combat desertification.

According to the Saudi Gazette, the National Centre for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) planted the trees while starting the Integrated Management and Sustainable Development of Pastures Project, which is part of the Kingdom's National Pasture Strategy Initiative, in line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.

The project aims to develop floodplains and gardens by planting more than 12 million trees and shrubs across 100 locations. By 2030, it also seeks to rehabilitate more than 225,000 hectares of pasture land in several regions.

In May, Saudi Arabia's NEOM, in collaboration with the Centre, launched a "regreening" initiative to plant 100 million indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses, in accordance with Vision2030.

Desertification is a form of land degradation that turns fertile land into non-productive desert, as a result of poor land-management. Desertification reduces the ability of land to support life, affecting wild species, domestic animals, agricultural crops and humans. The Middle East is particularly vulnerable to drought and desertification, with many countries in the region facing rising temperatures and longer and more frequent droughts, placing pressure on water supplies and food production.

This is true.

The areas of concentration of rivers in what is today central and southern Najd and southern Hejaz alone are twice as large as the one in modern-day Iraq. In fact on that map, modern-day KSA has the largest concentration of all shown territory.

Unfortunately most of those rivers and lakes have dried up today and those that have not are wadis (non-permanent flowing rivers) but the question is if this ecosystem could be returned? If this is the case, KSA could turn into one of the major food baskets of the planet.

And sometimes those wadis turn into rivers that contribute to floods.

Saudi Crown Prince announces Saudi Green Initiative Forum in Egypt

Second SGI and Middle East Green Initiative Summit will be held alongside Cop27 next month

The National

Oct 21, 2022

Saudi Arabia has launched two high-profile green forums spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to take place next month alongside the Cop27 climate change summit in Egypt.

Prince Mohammed on Thursday announced that the second Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) Summit and Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum would be held in Sharm El Sheikh in tandem with Cop27.

The MGI Summit will be held on November 7 and the SGI Forum on November 11 and 12.

The second SGI Forum will feature an elite line-up of climate experts and thought leaders to discuss the progress that has been made towards achieving the climate targets announced by the kingdom last year.

The theme of this year’s forum, ‘From ambition to action’, reflects Saudi Arabia’s determination to turn these targets into reality by catalysing collective action to confront climate challenges that impact the entire world, according to a press release.

Prince Mohammed said of the gatherings: “We are holding them in tandem with Cop27, an event bringing nations from around the world together under one roof, to advance global climate ambitions by inspiring joint activity at local, regional and international levels.

“I would like to thank His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian government for hosting the MGI Summit and SGI Forum in Egypt this year,."

MGI and SGI were launched by Prince Mohammed in 2021 to enhance Saudi Arabia’s environmental action, in line with the kingdom’s Saudi Vision 2030.

He used the opening of the first SGI Forum in October 2021 to announce the kingdom aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 through the Carbon Circular Economy approach.

Under SGI, the kingdom will plant 10 billion trees across the country and designate 30 per cent of country’s land and sea territories as protected areas. In addition, Saudi Arabia has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes annually by 2030.

First of all, MbS is the Crown Prince, King Salman is the king.
Secondly what investment? It is just a conference held in SeS, Sinai. The Saudi Green Initiave is a Saudi Arabian initiative made for KSA. Regional countries can join too and start their own "green" policies and they already joined after the Saudi Green Initiative was made official. Iraq, GCC, Jordan, Yemen and other neigbhours of KSA already joined. Egypt probably as well from what I can see.

So this is great news for KSA and the region.
