Is Pakistan more dangerous than Afghanistan?

According to the rankings of the Terrorism Risk report, yes, Pakistan has been regarded as more prone to terrorism than Afghanistan, implying that Pakistan is more dangerous than Afghanistan. In fact, Pakistan has been regarded as the most prone to terrorism than Iraq or any country in the world, with only Somalia being 'higher ranked', where there is essentially total anarchy & no government. Not only is this list preposterous, but very hard to fathom. If you believe the reports, you will feel like Pakistan will totally collapse any day, or that the terrorists will overthrow the government & take the nukes from them. But somehow, the predictions of the 'accurate Western reporting' never comes true.

Besides the terrorist activity in the AfPak region, in the FATA, the areas of KP close to FATA, & parts of Balochistan; most of Pakistan is free from terrorism. While there are issues of ethnic violence in Karachi, most cities in Pakistan, like Islamabad, Lahore, Abbottabad; most cities in Punjab & Sindh are pretty much free from terrorism. Places like Gilgit-Baltistan have never even heard of terrorism, with the beautiful (& the highest ones in the world, like K2 & Nanga Parbat) mountains attracting thousands of international tourists every year. People in Baltistan, especially in places like Hunza are full of liberal Ismaili Muslims, that are renowned for valuing education for everyone, women rights, & extend hospitality beyond words. Then there is Chitral & the Kalash (from 'Kafiristan', or non-Muslims), which are equally liberal, safe & attract tourists from all over the world. And then, Azad Kashmir, which is also free from terrorism or terrorist threats, is renowned for its beautiful valleys, & being one of the most beautiful places in the world, attracting plenty of tourists as well.

Pakistan is currently embroiled in winning back territory in the FATA from the grip of the terrorists, something it is doing a great job in, & parts of Balochistan riddled by a few separatists. Then there is a serious problem of ethnic violence in Karachi, spurred by the inept political parties that play the ethnicity card. Everything else is pretty normal in Pakistan. There is a huge misperception that Pakistan is the most (or the second most) dangerous country in the world to live in. Pakistanis are pretty much in charge of their own destinies, which can't be said about Afghanistan or many other countries.

I don't think it's more dangerous for non-Pakistanis either. In fact, it is just as dangerous for non-Pakistanis as it is for Pakistanis. As long as you stay away from FATA, parts of Balochistan & KP, you are as safe as most parts of the world. As I said, there are thousands of people that travel to Pakistan every year to go to Gilgit-Baltistan to climb the K2 & other high peaks. Most parts of Pakistan are free from terrorism, but the same can't be said about Afghanistan or many other countries out there.

MashaAllah the good news is that i have not heard much bomb blasts since 1 month, so it seems that slowly Pakistan is coming out of this mess but still our Army brothers must search & destroy these terrorists, even 1 terrorist is dangerous it can damage 1000 young & poor childrens. Continue operation after operation till Pakistan is cleared off terrorists like TTP or BLA.

P.S I don't think Pakistan is dangerous than Afghanistan, furthermore i doubt if Pakistan is even in top 20 failed states now.

Those who believe in such nonsense diatribe should be given one day tour of Afghanistan, Somalia and rest of Africa.. If they come back alive then yes indeed Pakistan is the most dangerous country in the world. Few months ago, I received a project proposal from a US army contractor..for Kandahar base. None of the engineer was willing to go to Afghanistan but the US contractor was willing to come to Pakistan.

Could it be that Pakistan is listed as more dangerous because Pakistan was always, even when it had nothing, a modern development state with a orientation towards the West. Now it a nuclear power, a country of so much potential that it's beyond tragic that it is as screwed up as it is -- did I mention the nuclear bit?

We seem to have become numb and hurt at what we think should be a sympathetic stance towards us as opposed to the "you did it to yourselves" that the world gives us -- may be the world has a point? possibly? maybe?
