Sautik Biswas of BBC discusses lack of hygene in India and wonders whether it is a cultural thing (more specific to hindus)

Is anybody really surprised that nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home?

Not really. The India Human Development report has been saying this for a while. The situation is worse in the villages, where two-thirds of the homes don't have toilets. Open defecation is rife, and remains a major impediment in achieving millennium development goals which include reducing by half the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015.

Is the lack of toilets and preference for open defecation a cultural issue in a society where the habit actually perpetuates social oppression, as proved by the reduced but continued existence of low caste human scavengers and sweepers?

It would seem so.

Mahatma Gandhi, India's greatest leader, had, in the words of a biographer, a "Tolstoyian preoccupation with sanitation and cleaning of toilets". Once he inspected toilets in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat. He reported that they were "dark and stinking and reeking with ***** and worms" in the homes of the wealthy and in a Hindu temple. The homes of the untouchables simply had no toilets. "Latrines are for you big people," an untouchable told Gandhi.

recent surveys have also showed that more families in india have T.V's & mobiles than access to toilets. experts are also confused that if ppl can afford T.V's & mobiles then why not toilets.

Yep, one person has commented saying his uncle build a big house spending lot of money(in UP) but when this guy asked about toilet, he got the impression that others think he is crazy.

Why relieve oneself in a 4X4 sq. feet room when one can do so in a practically unlimited open field with the cool morning breeze patting one's arse?

...and it's eco-friendly too.

In our country, or shall I say our subcontinent, terms jaanwar and insaan are often used interchangeably :)

I find it disgusting.
A law should be made to have proper hygienic standards in all dwellings in the villages. Start teaching kids from the early grades of the importance of cleanliness.
Think of all the worm infestations and all the diseases...something to be really ashamed of.
I think we should start welcoming all threads that point out to our toilets or rather NO TOILETS at homes.

Govt pays money to people to build toilets( subsidy). What else govt can do?

I think we should try to change the minds of peoples especially those who live in country side..sure there was time when peoples used to go in open field for pee or poo but its not good hygienically and socially ..animals don't feel shy to shag their partners in public but we cannot do that..what if someone make your video and upload it on internet especially in case of girls
