You need to distinguish the modern Nation State from the Indic Civilization.
Of course the Republic of India is a direct creation of the British Empire. The whole concept of nation states only emerged in the Napoleonic era. Before that present day India was a patchwork of Kingdoms.

A political entity doesn't have to be a nation state, it can be a kingdom, empire, city state like Athen.....etc.
Nation state merely refers to a political entity defined by one common people, a homogenous state.

Historically India isn't a single political entity. Post 1947, India became a state, but not a nation state. India is a union of many nation states.
