Presumably you are asking if humans are ends in themselves, or means to an end.
To me, personally, the answer is clear: we are an accident of nature and of natural Darwinian selection, and just happen to be the dominant species on this particular very small planet. There must be millions of such dominant species in millions of other planets; perhaps, if we manage not to blow ourselves up, our distant descendants may find themselves in contact with those. There must also be millions of other species on other planets where no one species is dominant.
We should look up at the night sky, and the stars blazing in deep space, and realise how utterly insignificant we are. At the very best, at the most optimistic, we are a means to an end; only the most smug and self-satisfied will think that we are a species chosen by some unfathomable divinity to rule over others. We are just bit players on the cosmic stage.
