There is a problem between Hindus and Muslims, I didn't say there is none, I just said that it could be resolved...and we have learned to coexist in most parts of India. A small section of Hindu organizations are there, that's political Hinduism, but their support base is much smaller than you think, or they think. Some political mistakes caused their formation and growth, but our constitutional framework is robust enough to ensure that the intolerance is mostly limited to nuisance, they cannot match the power of religious extremist groups in some neighbouring countries. Beef ban in Maharashtra was an intolerant step, but not to the extent of persecution and exodus of minorities that we have seen in some neighbouring countries, or in history of other countries, like in Persia....and that beef ban was criticized by a far greater number of Hindus themselves. In 70 years there was only one Muslim who was murdered allegedly for killing cow, and there could be a 'personal enmity' angle also, that incident was vehemently debated, criticized all over India, the perpetrators have been booked...but yes, not one man should have died for this. We need to control such things. The difference between extremism in Islam and in Hinduism is that the former apparently has a religious basis, Muslim extremists quote from their religious texts to find inspiration, Hindu extremism doesn't have any religious text to find inspiration, they are just reactionary forces who are trying to 'give it back', so they have lesser appeal, and easier to control. Another point is that Islam is resistant to reforms, it follows the 1400 old texts strictly in a modern world, some of the things that were suitable then may not be suitable now, some sharia laws for example (and some people want to implement it), but Hinduism is more open to reforms, we have got rid of a few bad things completely, we are working towards getting rid of a few others and had success in many places, like caste and untouchability, with more education we are positive about reforming all the bad aspects in maybe 50 years. I think Sufism was a reforming attempt in Islam, it is probably the most tolerant form of Islam, and adopting Sufism as the primary form of Islam can do a lot of good for Islam and rest of the world. And Muslims need to listen more to their educated intellectual sections than to some mullahs, that will lead to reforms and bring some positive changes in the community.
Btw, I know I am replying to Al-zakir.
