London - Asharq Al-Awsat

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has hinted that it would close the Strait of Hormuz if Iran is prevented from using it, in what appeared to be the first response to the US plan to end waivers on Iranian oil exports.

"If Iran’s benefits in the Strait of Hormuz, which according to international rules is an international waterway, are denied, we will close it,” IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said after the Trump administration revealed Monday that it will no longer exempt any countries from US sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil.

Iran has previously threatened to close the strait.

“Don't play with fire, or you will regret,” Iranian President Rouhani cautioned Trump last July. Rouhani said that the Americans should come to realize that establishing peace with Iran is the mother of all peace and waging war with the country is the mother of all wars.

At the same time, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei agreed that Rouhani’s threats to close the international waterway expressed the regime’s policy.

Khamenei replaced chief commander of IRGC Mohammad Ali Jafari with Brigadier General Hossein Salami, seven days after the US designated the group a foreign terrorist organization.

Tangsiri added that replacing the IRGC commander-in-chief had nothing to do with Washington’s recent decision.

However, Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Brigadier-General Abu al-Fadl Shakarji said Monday that Salami’s appointment is a blow to the US.

The Iranian foreign ministry said Iran was in "constant talks with its international partners including the Europeans" on Washington’s ending of the exemptions. It added that an “important decision" will be announced later, without elaborating.

China, India, North Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and Greece will face US sanctions starting May in case they continue to purchase Iranian oil. In November, Washington reimposed strict economic sanctions against Tehran and all states that don’t abide by them, after its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

I am told that the Yemen war is about the Saudi's trying to run an oil pipeline through Yemen and thus avoid the Straits of Hormuz, as a precursor to the attack on Iran. Any thoughts?

False.. Saudi Arabia has its own ports on the red sea with pipelines from east to west..Check the maps..

The observation is that the oil from the fields that normally use the Gulf would use this new pipeline. It might be due to capacity on the Red sea route. Anyway, it's a point that was mentioned somewhere, I wondered how credible it was.

I have no doubt its possible but Americ**ts will not take it and come with its full force, which Iran will not be able to hold unfortunately.

If the Saudis really wanted to build a pipeline somewhere far away from Hormuz they would have done it in Oman which is a peaceful and developed country with a flat terrain and an infrastructure much better than the mountainous failed state of Yemen.

I would word this more like - Yemen war is about Saudis primarily trying to prevent Iran from controlling the Suez canal/red sea via control of parts of Yemen/ Yemen. Secondarily i think the Saudis are taking this war as a chance to reassert hegemony over Yemen or installation of a pro- Saudi govt (at the min).

Precursor, bluffs, etc dont really matter with Iran, because there is no element of surprise. Iran cannot wake up any day and say Iran was surprised xxx country attacked. Taking down Iran is doable, but its alot of hardwork, and so far, ive not seen any "hardworkers"willing to step up and take a go at it. It can and might happen, but there is no way out of the fact that it will still be hardwork regardless of who goes in to do what.[/QUOTE]

Iran should find a way to solve it's issue with America.american president is Trump and Trump hates Iran.iran should stop all proxies in middle east.amerjcans have excuse and they have lots of allies.nobody wants destruction of iran.i think mullah regime in Iran needs to change its behavior towards Europe and america.russia will not save Iran just because of israel.iran is playing a very dangerous game.war in Iran means more problems for pakistan.americans want end of all proxies.ask houthis and Assad to stop.convey a positive message to Americans and stop nuclear missile tests.america under Trump is very dangerous for iran.kindly understand my point.

Trump could send the US military against Iran and then spend the next few weeks playing golf, leaving all the hard work to other people.

I remember what Afghanistan and Iraq said before US invasion... in the end those were just words from a dying regime..

what do you mean by lol? is this funny? are you serious about closing hormuz? you know americans.they want excuse.why you want war? do something so that irani oil can reach to other countries.why serious about fighting a war with america? i can't even count american allies.they are too much and american navy itself is a nightmare for any navy.avoid war,use diplomatic channels, time to ease tensions.
