Construction work has begun on a security fence that will run along Iraq's border with Syria, Anbar provincial officials announced Wednesday (July 24th).

The fence aims to curb infiltrations and the smuggling of arms and contraband into the country.

The border guard forces command in the west of the country and the Iraqi army command in Anbar are supervising the project, with funds provided by the Iraqi government, Anbar governor Qassem al-Fahdawi told Al-Shorfa.

"The fence will be built over three stages and will be equipped with surveillance cameras and monitoring towers every 1,000 metres," he said.

Work is currently under way on the first stage of the fence, a three-metre-high, 10-kilometre stretch covering the areas most targeted by infiltrators, he said.

The next two stages are to be completed over the next two years, al-Fahdawi said.
