Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander says its troops in Syria - Yahoo! News

DUBAI (Reuters) - Members of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) are in Syria providing non-military assistance and Iran may get involved militarily if Syria comes under attack, its commander said on Sunday.

The statement is the first official acknowledgement from a senior military commander that Iran has a military presence on the ground in Syria where an uprising has left tens of thousands dead since it began 18 months ago.

Western countries and Syrian opposition groups have accused Iran of providing weapons and expertise to Syrian armed forces and have suspected an Iranian military presence inside the country. Iran has denied this.

The Islamic Republic has backed President Bashar al-Assad since the crisis began and regards his rule as a key part of its axis of resistance against Israel and Sunni Arab states.

"A number of members of the Qods Force are present in Syria but this does not constitute a military presence," commander-in-chief of the IRGC Mohammad Ali Jafari said at a news conference on Sunday, Iranian news agency ISNA reported.

Qods is an IRGC unit set up to export Iran's ideology. It has been accused of plotting attacks inside Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Jafari did not indicate how many members were in Syria but said they were providing "intellectual and advisory help".

"The IRGC is giving intellectual help and even financial assistance but there is no military presence," he said.

He also said that Iran would change its policy and offer military backing to Assad if Syria came under attack.

"I say specifically that if Syria came under military attack, Iran would also give military support but it ... totally depends on the circumstances," he said.

Iranian officials have said Tehran has supplied medical and humanitarian relief to Damascus but have denied all allegations of military involvement.

What's your point oldman?first,it's non-military assistance.second,we have a defence pact with Syria,we can send troops any time we like.third,Why don't you mention Turkish and Arab terrorists that U.S and EU countries are training and sending to Syria. If you can do that, then it's none of your business what we are doing in Syria.

Iran Rejects Reports on Military Presence in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari strongly rejected western media reports alleging that Iran has deployed troops in Syria, saying that Tehran is only giving advice and spiritual assistance to Bashar al-Assad's government.

"We just give them our experience, advice and intellectual assistance," Jafari told reporters in a press conference here in Tehran on Sunday.

"Compared with certain Arab countries' military presence and support for opposition groups in Syria, we have actually done nothing," he said.

He said the very few IRGC Quds force members who had some time in the past been in Lebanon or Syria did not serve as military or combat troops, alluding that their presence was aimed at a transfer of knowledge and experience.

"That doesn't mean our military presence in there," Jafari said.

The Syrian terrorists and their supporters have on many occasions claimed that Iran, specially its IRGC's Quds force, are helping Bashar al-Assad's government through a strong military presence, and even alleged that Iranian forces help the Syrian squads in the fight against the rebels.

To that end, the terrorists have also attempted to take forced confession from abducted Iranian nationals in Syria.

You denied in the past sending people in Iran. Now its confirmed. But heck you don't care anyways. Just like you deny developing nuke weapons. Hence my point.

Look who's talking. So what? Iran is supporting Syria to keep the country stable, and have full rights to do so. While US & UK are supporting and funding the "rebels" who are fighting alongside al-Qaeda.
What a ... :disagree:

Oldman your country is making a big mistake siding with the Arabs against the Iranians. :coffee:

100 % agreed with this comment. For what are the US siding against Iran and Iranians ? because Iran is against Jewish/Zionist dominance in the region and the world. Someone tell these dumb US politicians that Iran singlehandedly is more valuable then all of the Arab countries combined. What do they export anyways, bombs and terror

Dude, we send advisors to Syrian army to instruct them how to tackle the foreign sponsored rebels. Syria is our ally so it is natural

Jewish dominance is far better than Arab dominance there...the jews just want them and their little country to be left alone...but arabs..have imperialistic notions...and also the jews have no historical hatred for Persians..but the arabs do harbor a deep hatred that goes beyond modern political context...both are not comparable..just saying.

I want all four Turkey-Iran-US-israel to hug each other, kiss and make up.

The most dangerous is the Jewish dominance, exorting money from the poor people and throwing it at the top to the elites. This is a danger for the entire world. Dont worry about the Arabs, these people are savage apes, look at their revolutions, they still capture their dictators and kill them on street like medieval times LOL. They are destroying themselfs

Dude whatever man.....by needlessly worrying about the jews you are only helping the arabs.

Like i said the Arabs are low IQ apes, they will suicide bomb each other out of existance, dont worry about them. Iran has a greater agenda and that is to tackle the Capitalist/Zionist thugs

No they aren't . Find some other mode of entertainment .....
