MOSCOW (Reuters) - Iranian Defence Minister Amir Hatami plans to visit Russia soon, the RIA news agency reported on Friday, citing a source at the Iranian defense ministry.

He is expected to hold talks with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, RIA reported.

Hatami plans to discuss the military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran and the latest developments in the region, according to the agency.

Maybe some effort can be made to revive stalled Su-30 negotiations.

The SU-30 discussion really depends on semi or full local production or not.

I wonder wether Russia will offer it for fears of Iranian reverse engineering along with pressure from US/Eu/Arab countries.

If SU-30 is a no go then Iran could consider J-31 and J-20 from China as potential fighter jets. They may not be up to par with Russia or US jets, but it's an improvement over the 1970's relics they currently have.

Well we could try and follow the Indian model - first buy some aircraft fully built (to sweeten the deal, and also get them in the inventory faster), then transition to domestic production. Iran has talked about TOT so I presume it wants the full deal. I know the Russians want to guard their tech very closely, but Iran is hardly an export competitor for Russia and we aren't going to be invaded any time soon.

If SU-30 is a no go then Iran could consider J-31 and J-20 from China as potential fighter jets.

That would probably be the best case scenario (short of making a 5th gen fighter competitive with the F-35 domestically...).

If the news below is true then it's not a bad option at all!

China Allegedly Sends Cutting-Edge Jet to Eye US-S Korea Joint Air Drill
Some evidence suggests that a Chinese fifth-generation J-20 fighter fulfilled an undercover operation earlier this week as the US and South Korea carried out the Vigilant Ace 2017 military exercise, Chinese media reported.

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) earlier said on its Weibo account that its reconnaissance aircraft, during a preplanned training exercise, took off from an air base in northern China and flew "to places they had never been before," Asia Times quotedChinese agency Sina.

With Seoul still keeping silent, speculations have emerged that the Korean intelligence agencies may have failed to track the Chinese planes allegedly gathering information on the air drills, involving the Pentagon’s top-notch F-22 ace warplanes. This raises the question of which plane managed to come and go totally undetected.

"If that’s the case, then the only Chinese plane that was so stealthy that [it] could come and go totally undetected must be the J-20," one commentator said, as delivered by Asia Times.

"One or two J-20s may have flown with the group, which first headed to the East China Sea in a freedom-of-navigation patrol, but the fighter then turned northeast and pierced Seoul’s airspace, taking advantage of its cutting-edge stealth coating without triggering any alarm on Seoul’s radars."

Other sources suggest that there was a whole, though small, batch of J-20s, which just entered service this year, at the key air force base in Cangzhou, in the northern province of Hebei.

I am highly skeptical of Chinese ever selling us major military hardware like fighter jets. far less likely then even Russia. as they have better relations with the US/west. and a relatively small transaction of some fighter jets would not be worth it for them.

The best opportunity iran has is Russia at this point. Their relations with the US/west is at an all time post cold war low. If the government cant pull the trigger now, its probably never going to happen.

and its not even entirely dependent on Russia. If the Iranian government was serious enough, they would find a way of making it happen. I just don't think its that high of a priority for the top levels of government.
