Iranian Ships Turn Back After a Warning About Arming Rebels in Yemen - WSJ

WASHINGTON—An Iranian flotilla suspected of carrying weapons bound for rebels in Yemen has reversed course and appeared to be heading home, averting a potential confrontation in the Gulf of Aden, U.S. defense officials said Thursday.

The cargo ships, accompanied by two Iranian warships, shifted course as a U.S. aircraft carrier moved within 200 nautical miles of the flotilla and Saudi Arabian officials said their sailors would attempt to search the ships if they tried to dock in Yemen.

U.S. defense officials said it was too soon to tell Thursday if a crisis had been averted. But initial indications suggested that the Iranian ships had abandoned an attempt to challenge the Saudi-led effort to prevent arms from reaching Houthi rebels in Yemen.

U.S. and Saudi officials have been keeping an eye on at least nine Iranian ships suspected of carrying weapons and supplies to Houthi fighters who have taken over much of Yemen.

On Tuesday, the U.S. military sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt and several other warships to the Gulf of Aden to send a warning to Iran not to challenge a United Nations arms embargo on the Houthis.

Saudi officials warned Iran that its sailors would try to search any ship that tried to dock in Yemen. And President Barack Obama said the U.S. had directly warned Iran not to send any weapons into a country that has been consumed by conflict.

“What we’ve said to them is that if there are weapons delivered to factions within Yemen that could threaten navigation, that’s a problem,” Mr. Obama said on MSNBC earlier this week. “And we’re not sending them obscure messages, we send them very direct messages about it.”

Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies have been carrying out nearly a month of airstrikes on Houthi fighters who have sought to take control of the major cities in Yemen, including the port of Aden.

Under pressure from the U.S., Saudi Arabia earlier this week announced it was curtailing its airstrikes against the rebels in Yemen as it tried to shift its focus to finding a political solution to the problem. But new strikes, apparently carried out by the Saudi-led coalition, hit weapons depots and other military installations in Yemen Thursday.

It is a big lie first Saudis created to justify their barbaric actions in killing thousands of innocent poor people of Yemen, and then US and others developed the lie... so,

1- Houthis are not an Iranian Militia as Saudis claim... They are a big part of Yemen and their actions are the follow up of their 2011 revolution to dismantle the old failed system and reconstruct a new democratic one...

2- Houthis started to move to Aden area only after Resigned President Abdu Rabbo Mansour realzed Al qaeda prisoners and help them to conquer South Yemeni lands.... They are announcing for a long time and even now that they want all Yemeni parties except Al qaeda to sit around a table for new system legal system creation....

3- Saudi's naively killing a bare-handed poor innocent people for their main goal which is to first install a puppet president in Yemen and then help Al qaeda terrorists to take some more land.... Since Saudi is an absolute dictatorship monarch system in hands of corrupt Al Saud family, they never bare a democratic system that responds to the people...

4- Iranian ships were patrolling in that exact area LONG before this war happened... They are fighting pirates and keep their huge fleet of commercial ships safe there...

5- Iranians are not naive to transfer weapons for Houthis by their very obvious warship fleet when there is a blockade on Yemeni ports....

6- Iranians mentioned many times that Houthis don't need new weapons for their current war as they have the access to the Yemeni army weapons which is a huge stockpile of various types of weapons...

7- There is no strategic decision being made by Houthis to respond to Saudis, If they take the decision, they have weapons to do the job... I think there is orders not to engage Saudis, so invaders lose their Western and Arab support as being a victim...

8- The Saudis are known for their lies and weakly engineered propaganda... 9 out of 10 lies they spread in the media turns out to be fake and absolute lie... I sometimes think they can not even lie good!! What happened to two Iranian colonel they claimed to be captured in Yemen?? What happened to destroyed convoy of armored vehicles and tanks of Houthis when it turned out to be Iraqi tanks destroyed by US in 1990!!!? What happened to Houthis bombing wheat and food trucks when they later confessed they bombed it because they suspected them carrying weapons inside wheat flour!! What happened to their claim that they made Iranian fleet to flee the area when their claimed fleet was in South East Asia at that time!!? and many other ones that get exposed everyday...

9- While Iran support Houthis and their revolution toward a democratic system politically, the Saudis and US themselves know that Iran has no control over Houthis and no Iranian ship is trying to get them weapons in daylight!!

10- Iran is not stupid to engage US and Saudis in a direct confrontation now and in Yemen... Iranians proved to be patient and having a good memory... make it up their favors somewhere else... Iran neither wants nor can afford to engage Yemeni war at the moment...

iranina terrorist regime arming houtis and saudi terrorist regime arming Sunni militia in iraq let the game begin
Well the problem is that you can't find any iranian supplied weapon like what we provided to Hezbollah or iraqi groups who fight ISIS at the hand of Houthis.

Considering the number of weapons available in Yeman you never know what they may have bought or stolen from who, that aside though. I was wondering if the IRG has descided on a little payback for the ships being turned back by impounding the Maersk Tigris or if some one knows why the ship was stopped?

this news is totally false. our ships haven't returned.
if you wanna connect that seizure to something, that's intercepting Iranian plane by Saudi fighters and bombarding the Sana'a airport to prevent it's landing:
