1979 onwards Pakistan had no choice but to make sure that its western border stayed safe (Afghanistan issue, The Red Army). thus came US and all through 80s when Iran was provocated by Sadam, US did whtever it could from Iran's eastern border ...
In my opinion Pakistan never caused open and blatent trouble for Iran, but there was stuff that Iran never liked or for that matter no one would like. fact lets face it

What choice we leave Iran with, they are a sovern nation like India, Pakistan, Srilanka and all in this region so they have all the right to be cozy with whoever they like, we have enough trouble already. Pakistan always wanted good relations with Iran and both countries are wise and have got brains.. No jingoism on Forums will make these neighbours go against each other.

Ahmadinejad , Karzai in Islamabad only means things will get better. and our next Govt. would do the same, make sure our Western neighbours Iran and Afghanistan are happy with us and we happy with them.

Iran only supported us when the Shah was in power. Afterwards they changed their tune, even though we supported and helped them in their war with Iraq.

We fought for influence in Afghanistan, Pakistan having come out on top.

Our relations are cordial at best and should remain that way.

Early Part of 1980s I lived in Peshawar i know Officers who were posted at Pak-Afghan Border at that time, i have seen the air denfence (light ack ack at that time) batteries deployed at Topser. Pakistan had its hands full defending against any aggression from Afghan border. and vigilant on our Eastern border, we were in no position to support anyone Militarily at that time.


Lived in Balochistan from Mid till Late 1980s. Iran-Iraq war was on at that time.

Our relations with Iran have to stand on their own merit and have nothing to do with the US or India. Iran is our neighbour and we have to be good neighbours and protect Iran. US has been applying all kind of pressure on Pakistan to drop the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline and Pakistan told the US to go take a hike. I am sure it will give a similar reply for the Listening posts. We Pakistanis do not stab our friends in the back and this is something our Iranian brothers should remember. The relations with Iran is challenging sometime because we have to remove the knife from our back and that does not leave us with a nice feelings. Brothers should protect each others interest. We do.....
