When one looks at the military sector, an important and key difficulty can be witnessed in various areas, ranging from fighter jets to tanks and naval ships. This difficulty lies in the area of engine development. The design and manufacture of engines is arguably one of , if not the most difficult aspect of any military project. Many nations (including highly advanced) that boast of fielding hardware, rely upon importing of this crucial technology. Iranian military development is growing at a rapid rate and one area which Iran can boast in is indeed this engine sector. Iran has achieved a respectable level in the engine technology in general, however, in this thread I will focus on marine engines.

The engines you see below were designed and manufactured by various bodies, either alone or jointly. They are:

1- Iran Defence Industry Organization (DI0)
2- IRGC
3- Iranian Navy
4- various private owned companies or so called "Knowledge based companies"
5- Other companies include Iran Heavy Diesel Manufacturing Company (DESA), MAPNA groups and others.

Water jet engine
"Toos Darya" is the first Iranian water jet engine. This version has 1200 horsepower, however, the next generation will have 3500 horsepower:

Revealed in 2017, this 200 horsepower engine is used to power various Iranian small boats to the speed of 41 knots.

This is a system developed to be used in Iranian military speed boats. Compared to earlier versions in Iranian use, this increases the speed of the boats by 30%, whilst reducing their fuel consumption by 25%. The system also leads to much better maneuverability of the boats.

Revealed back in 2011, not much is known about this engine except that is was designed to have 850 horspower:

Future projects:

There are various future projects Iran is developing. The most important of which are:

1) The development of a 25MW gas turbine engine. Iranian MAPNA is one of the leading gas turbine producers, they are working with the defence sector to develop this. They have developed many different types of gas turbines till date. For example, here is the MAPNA MGT-30 gas turbine with 25MW:

2) Development of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) for Iranian submarines.

3) Nuclear reactor engine. The development of these engines is on Iran's agenda.

Unfortunately the informations available were scattered and not abundant to make this thread (took me a while!). Nevertheless, I hope you find this thread informative and helpful. To my Iranian friends, lets try and keep this thread updated!

thank you bro well done great job. i was thinking about an Iranian aircraft carriers this whole day and my main concern was the engines. seems like with four bonyan-4 engines we can build a 7000-11000 tons carrier.

You're welcome. I am happy you found it useful. Once the 20MW gas turbine is ready, we can use that in combination with the Bonyan-4 (or next generation). In mid to long term, Iran's nuclear engine should be ready.

Nice, can you give more information about the company who build it ? How many of them ? Are they state owned or private owned ? Is there any foreign involvement or purely local development ? Thanks.

Indonesia state owned company also produce marine engine with cooperation with South Korea company.

They are generally developed by the Defence Industry Organisations (DIO). However projects can be developed jointly between other bodies such as IRGC, IRIN (Iranian Navy). Privately owned companies had not played that much of a role thus far but that will increase greatly in the future. For example, the Iranian water jet engine was also worked on by a private company called Mosein Mehr Co. Video below shows them, but sadly it is in Persian:

In terms of foreign involvement, due to sanctions this is nigh impossible. Iran had to develop them locally. Once again it shows these sanctions were an opportunity for Iran if used correctly.

Great post,it gathers of a lot of scattered info and puts it all into one coherent thread.:enjoy:
It really shows just how far iran has come with indigenising the production of marine/naval propulsion systems in the last 10 years, hopefully in the future we`ll get to see combined diesel and gas turbine electric propulsion systems for the next generation of 3-5000 tonne frigates and 5-10,000 tonne destroyers, not to mention aip for the kilos and the future besat class as well.

The future is definitely exciting. During Iran nuclear day for this year, the Iranian nuclear reactor project for ships and submarine was supposed to be showcased, but due to Coronavirus, this was delayed:

Speaking to IRINN on Wednesday, AEOI spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi said President Hassan Rouhani has ordered to delay the unveiling of the new nuclear achievements amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
He said the new achievements include a series of products with industrial and medical application, including a number of radiopharmaceuticals for curing cancer, nuclear propulsion systems for ships and submarines, as well as high- and medium-power lasers with industrial use."
