What's new

Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh sentenced to 38 years, 148 lashes

dude these guys in iran think of themselves as some kind of superpower and makes fun of pakistan.you should also support pakistan next time if you want me to talk with respect.they don't give respect to us.they think of us as some kind of fools.
i've been 10 times there and never heard
Irani apologists on this forum are the most wide-eyed extremists you'll see. There isn't a single Iranian that ever says anything other than the IRGC/Ayatollah line.

None of them will condemn this.
you seem to be wrong.

extremists exist every where: the Khamenei boy fans, the anti Iranian guys , the anti Jews or the anti Muslims , the anti Pakistani or anti Indian.

i don't think you can call to be tolerant guy when you say "all guys from Iran are extremists"
and especially for the guys who blame only one country or one people kind but not others

this forum having lot of guys doing propaganda

but many are honest .

Hi urienreghed,

I can tell you that few years back i was writing in an Iranian forum , it was one of the largest forums on the net , called the Iranian defense forum , which have been closed for a few years.

Sure there where a number of extremists there too , but usually you would get opinions from both side of the Iranian political camp. But I am sure that if there was an event like this one there would certainly be an outcry by many.

This does not happen here. I am sure there are Iranians here that don't approve of what happened to Nasrin. , I am sure it would disturb any decent human being. But here for some reason they are silence.

I find it frustrating that since 2009 the voice of the reformists in Iran are silenced. Not just here but their whole presence over the Internet was reduced. As if they gave up.

Most of what you get here is regime supporters propaganda and one line responses.

This goes for my country too. Many times i read stuff about my country and I hold myself not the answer back because it is usually limited to mud throwing. No real conversation , no real dialog. You really cant address complicated issues in that manner. So i stay silence.

I think Iran is very interesting and important because the problems that exist there , exist on some level in most of the middle east. Dictatorship , Human rights issues , separation of state and religion , woman rights.

peace

Hi
No they exist and majority of course support her.
There are two explanations to the comments: first one is no freedom in Iran and there is a propaganda team too, second is that people outside they often are ... individualists they don't want to think of this except in their communauty talks on persian language twitter and co. but even there they know many places are infected either by the propaganda or the terrorist band of MeK . they are no polite they behave like retards.
these groups make talks impossible : it is their goal

Sadly for 2009 . I am terribly sad too.
There is a big need of change in order to give a chance to Iran
Sadly the guys there they are paid and they just think their immediate interest.

very nice to read my friend :)

Iran is led by treators : they just take the power for their benefits. Like many dictatorships.
I know many Iranian they just want to forget their country... but they cannot . they are terribly negative.

And when you see that people who sacrify themselves are insulted by all the propaganda teams.
it is not easy job.

hopefully these guys, we always need to hope, understand that Iran future is in their hands
there is no need to be dependant to west or east, like said Moussavi, but there is a urgent need
for democracy and the real Iranian spirit leading the country

Iranian history is genius. Iranian leadership is one of the worst and retard.
what is done to her is a sad proof

take care Sammuel

Thank you Urien ,

For taking the time to reply and for your kind words.

I also think that we should look to the future with hope. I know sometimes things look bad , but i don't think it is because things have gotten worse. It is just that today we get to see every thing first hand on the internet and television.

Interesting choice for an avatar. The man with the raven on his shield ... :-)

Peace and love

Defying Unjust Court Process, Nasrin Sotoudeh Refuses to Appeal Prison Sentence

Refusing to legitimize the unjust judicial process in Iran, in which defendants held on politically motivated charges are sentenced to long prison terms without fair trials, imprisoned defense attorney Nasrin Sotoudeh has stated she will not appeal her prison sentence.

Sotoudeh has also provided notes on her verdict (she was denied a physical copy) to her husband. According to these notes, Sotoudeh will be required to serve 12 years out of the 33.8 years and 148 lashes she was sentenced to in February 2019 (subject to appeal). It is not clear whether a previously issued sentence of five years will be added to that sentence.

“During visitation [on March 17, 2019] Nasrin said she does not accept the verdict or the Iranian judicial system so she will not seek a challenge and refuses to be present at the Appeals Court just as she was absent from the preliminary trial,” her husband Reza Khandan told the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) on March 18.

During a phone conversation on March 11 in which she was only allowed to speak briefly, Sotoudeh told her husband that branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran had sentenced her to 33 years in prison and 148 lashes.

Nasrin Sotoudeh to Receive PEN Canada’s One Humanity Award

NasrinSotoudeh-slider2-632x340.jpg

TORONTO (April 8, 2019) – Nasrin Sotoudeh, the Iranian human rights lawyer renowned for her defense of women’s and children’s rights, will receive the One Humanity award at PEN Canada’s annual gala on April 11, 2019 in Toronto. Sotoudeh, 56, who is currently in prison, was sentenced in March 2019 to 148 lashes and more than 38 years imprisonment for national security offences. The award will be presented by Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood to Iranian-Canadian human rights activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam MacKay, who will receive it on Sotoudeh’s behalf.

“The ongoing persecution of this brave woman for helping women to secure fair treatment should cease immediately,” said Atwood. “Nasrin Sotoudeh has tirelessly defended women and children from exactly the sort of arbitrary judicial rulings that have now been used to silence her. Let us call on the Iranian authorities to respect fundamental justice and grant Nasrin Sotoudeh an immediate and unconditional release.”

Sotoudeh was arrested in June 2018 after providing legal services for women prosecuted for appearing in public without a headscarf. She was charged with spreading “propaganda against the state,” “encouraging (moral) corruption and prostitution” and “publishing false information to disturb public minds.” Sotoudeh was previously arrested in September 2010, after defending activists detained during protests which followed Iran’s June 2009 presidential elections. On that occasion, she received a six-year prison sentence for “propaganda against the regime” and “acting against national security.”

“Many years ago, as head of Stop Child Executions, I worked with Nasrin Sotoudeh to defend women and children. I can say, unequivocally, that she is a Persian lioness – an Iranian Mandela,” said Afshin-Jam MacKay. “She is the epitome of compassion, hard work, courage and sacrifice, and she has selflessly defended others for decades. Her dedication to these causes has meant time away from her loved ones, and now it has taken away both her safety and her freedom. The least we can do now is come to her defense. I am actively campaigning to save my personal hero #wearenasrin #freenasrin.”

Established in 2006, PEN’s One Humanity prize acknowledges writers whose work “transcends the boundaries of national divides and inspires connections across cultures.” Previous winners include the Saudi blogger Raif Badawi, Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega, Palestinian poet Ashraf Fayadh and the Vietnamese blogger Dieu Cay. PEN Canada first awarded its annual One Humanity prize to Ms. Sotoudeh in 2011. She is the only person to receive the award more than once.

“Nasrin Sotoudeh is a heroic figure,” said Richard Stursberg, President of PEN Canada. “She has defended freedom of expression in circumstances that few of us could endure. Her refusal to be intimidated by authoritarian clerics has been a model of principled dissent and we have chosen to award this prize to her again to highlight the courage and integrity that she has shown throughout her ordeal.”

PEN Canada is the Canadian centre of PEN International, an international community of writers with 144 centres in more than 100 countries. It is a forum where writers meet freely to discuss their work, and a voice speaking out for writers silenced in their own countries.

Background

A mother of two, Nasrin Sotoudeh was previously arrested in 2010 and initially sentenced to 11 years in prison on national security charges. The sentence was subsequently reduced to six years. She was released in 2013 after widespread international condemnation of the sentence. Since her most recent arrest, in June 2018, Ms. Sotoudeh’s children have not been allowed to visit her in prison.

In 2011 Sotoudeh received PEN America’s Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award and PEN Canada’s One Humanity prize. She has also been awarded the European Parliament’s 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and the 2018 Ludovic Trarieux Human Rights Prize.
