What's new

Iranian chief of staff Major General Baqeri arrives in Moscow, New military deal on the way

Iran just joined SCO and China does not care about US sanctions. They have been selling to Pakistan and buying from Russia irrespective of US sanctions.
Arms embargo has been lifted for more than one year. So where are the deals? Where are those worthy Chinese/Russian arms?

. . . .
Why don't Iran buy from EU countries like France?
Because if some day push comes to shove and the US wants to attack Iran, NATO will have to follow along because of their ties with the United States. And you cannot buy weapons from a potential enemy. Basically, for the same reason that Pakistan does not buy Indian weapons, or the United States does not buy weapons from Russia directly, etc.

That's already based on the very unrealistic assumption that Iran could offer them a deal so profitable that would tempt them to sell weapons to Iran.

Plus, Iran still has an open lawsuit against the UK for failure to deliver weapons purchased before the revolution.

Russia is just a sensitive b1tch at this point.

If it supplies Iran with SU-35 it pisses off:

Israelis,
Arabs,
Saudi Arabia cash cow,
EU,
US,
And now you can add Turkey/Azeribajian to the list

Now ask yourself for a few billion dollars does it make sense for Russia to piss off this many countries? Countries who buy much more Russian arms or have influence in geopolitics than a small Iranian arms contract could ever hope to have?

Russia only provides Iran with things it can mostly likely already produce.
no sane country will piss off so many countries by appeasing only one country. its common sense.

سرلشکر باقری: قراردادهای خرید تسلیحاتی در سفر به روسیه پیگیری می‌شود

From the news article:
سرلشکر باقری با بیان اینکه ما قراردادهای خرید تسلیحاتی بعد از خاتمه تحریم تسلیحاتی را با روسیه داریم

So Iran signed recent weapons purchase deals with Russia. This is official confirmation.

Any speculations as to what these could logically consist of?

Iran could be going for the SU57.

For example, I'm still think that it was no accident that Iran sent now all 3 Kilo submarines to the dry dock at the same time. Perhaps there is already an agreement on the supply of components for overhaul and modernization.

Does Iran even have money to buy weapons? With China, they tried to buy their fighter jet in exchange for oil but were refused apparently. With Russia, thats not even possible as they are oil producer themself.

Now UN arms embargo is off of Iran we can expect many defence-related projects taking birth world over.

It would be great if people understand a few basic things about Iranian armed forces. Firstly, both the Artesh and the IRGC are fighting armies and don't have fancy over-inflated imperialist titles like "Lieutenant General". The highest military rank is a Major General.

Mohammad Bagheri (Persian: محمد باقری‎, born Mohammad-Hossein Afshordi[4] (Persian: محمدحسین افشردی‎) is an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps military commander serving at the most senior military position available in Iran, Chief of Staff for the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He holds the rank of Major General within the Iranian military.

Also, a military intelligence expert with his experience dating back to the Jange tahmili where like most Iranian senior officers he rose through the ranks in combat, he holds a Ph.D. in political geography and taught at Iran's Supreme National Defense University. In 1980, he joined the IRGC during the war and quickly established a reputation as a good tactician and a strategic planner.

That is certainly the case. Iranian domestic defence production is quite advanced, however, Iran is cooperating with many nations in several advanced projects. Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran's foremost strategic planner is currently in Russia where many deals are being finalized.

Iran’s top commander says the Islamic Republic is resolute on the improvement of military cooperation with Russia in line with the administration of President Ebrahim Raeisi’s “Look to the East” policy.

Speaking upon his arrival in Moscow on Sunday, chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri, said the new administration attaches special importance to the East and the Eastern countries.

LOL, Iran's Forex reserves are five times more than Pakistan and it barely has any foreign debt and is blessed with 2nd largest gas deposits and 4th largest oil reserves in the world. Buying anything is not the issue, but the problem is the mullahs fear of a modern airfore dating back to the attempted Nojeh coup of 1980. Pilots tend to be more educated and independent and since then the IRIAF has been deprived of funds to modernize. Even in the missile age, modern jet aircraft are a necessity for any nation serious about its defence. Iran's faces multiple threats and investing in the airforce is essential. The Chinese J10 should be a good interim fighter.

You cannot buy weapons with forex reserves. lol

As for J10, yes it's a formidable jet which apparently Iran tried to buy in exchange for oil but were refused. So, this is what I was trying to ask, if Iran does not have hard cash for China then how come it has for Russia?
