History: Holocaust was virtually a non-issue in Iran just a few years ago. It used to be seen as part of dark history of Europe with no connection with Iran. Some years ago Iranian TV had even made a drama based on a true story by the name of Zero Degree Turn which showed how an Iranian had saved thousands of Jews during World War II.
Things then changed when Cartoons of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) were published in the name of free speech hurting feelings of Muslims all over the world. In many places riots happened. But in Iran, Ahmadinejad tried to turn the issue against Europe by attacking western sensibilities and their holy cows via "freedom of speech" just like the Europeans had tried to hurt Muslims. So he organized a competition for making holocaust cartoon. Below is a recent example of how things are going there.
