Iran Uses Bomber Drones for First Time in Military Drills

Iran’s military used bomb-laden drones for the first time during army exercises, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported.


The Iranian-made unmanned aircraft, named Karrar, dropped 500-pound (227-kilogram) bombs on ground targets during drills in the central province of Esfahan, IRNA said on Tuesday, quoting army spokesman Brigadier General Farhad Goudarzi.


Until now the bombs were carried by F-4 and F-5 fighter jets, he added.

Pakistan should take a note on the massive advancements in Drone technologies and usages in our neighborhood. Turkey, Iran and China are all pioneering new warfare technologies and techniques. We need a lot of catching up to do.

This should be in the uav thread and the news and picture of karrar are from it's unveiling back around 2005-2006. At least the image and video is, though I'm not sure what the weight of the weapon is in the picture. So maybe the 500 pound capacity might be a new feature...

Is its a2a engagement capability tested and improved.
This can also carry a2a missiles like IR homing variants (side winder, r73 etc.) . No need for a radar lock but getting close to the target and when missile sensor beeps you can fire the missile and forget. Turkey has Akinci drone project which has a2a capability and it is under its last tests for example.

My personal opinion is the future of ramjets for interceptor a2a uavs. Specifically Rocket launch to high altitude - speed and ramjet engine for sustained flight. Ramjets are cheaper and simpler to produce than jet engines as it does not have moving parts. Higher quantities can be produced easier than jet engines.

Rocket(possibly two rockets for ground launch) should be separately attached for this one and possibly vertically launched to high altitude-speed with rockets. Landing can be made by parachute like Karrar drone or a landing gear should be installed.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_D-21) mach 3 5000km range.

This one is a rocket - ramjet combination drone(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIM-10_Bomarc) with 700km range mach 2.5 . Need to install a landing gear to this as well. Since these are large drones internal bays can be developed and small missiles like sidewinder,r73 can be carried inside the body for CIM10 or inside the wings for D21.
