TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran plans to export 2000 megawatts of electricity to Pakistan's western province of Balochistan.

Abdul Malik, Chief Minister of Pakistan's Balochistan province, in a joint press conference with Governor of Iranian province of Sistan and Balouchestan Ali Osat Hashemi, said Tehran has agreed to provide his province with 2000 megawatts of electricity.

He said 1000 megawatts of the energy imported from Iran will be used in Gwadar Port.

Iran annually exports over $2 billion worth of electricity to the neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Iraq.

The Islamic Republic seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity.

Elsewhere in the press conference, held Sunday in Quetta, the Pakistani official invited Iranian traders to invest in Pakistan in different fields such as fishing and mines.

Elsewhere, Abdul Malik also noted that the Iran-Pakistan joint border committee will hold a meeting later this month to discuss recent incidents in the border areas between two countries.

Hashemi is on a visit to Pakistan’s Balochistan province to discuss promotion of bilateral ties.

Anyone knows how much each provinces and territories consume?

We have a port which we want to develop on par with other regional ports and free zones but we cannot build and run a power plant for the use of the port only.

Can't run a port properly unless there is no load shedding. 1000 will be for port and 1000 for rest areas.

1000 MW just for port. Seriously? Gwadher is what? Intergalactic space station?
I don't know much about Gawadar. But what I do know is, 1000w is not just for port, but the city itself as well. And the city is quite populated. Once port is operational, there will be more population, maybe airport as well etc.

The electricity won't be coming tomorrow. It'll take one to two years. So gov't has to plan in advance.

Also I don't know how this transfer works, but just because Iran is going to transfer 1000w doesn't mean gawadar will consume 1000. It'll pay for what it consumes, maximum of 1000, minimum of 0. So in summer it might consume 1000, in winter 800.

The electricity should be made only limited to Balochistan as this will promote the industrilization of Balochistan as more industry will prefer to transfer to Balochistan
And it's in Iran's interest to stabilize Balochistan

Transmission lines are generally a built along the already established routes primarily for the ease of transportation of heavy equipment required for the construction of the pylons. There are two possible land routes from Iran into Pakistan for the transmission lines.

Northern route being the Quetta – Nushki- Nokhundi– Taftan- Mirjava road. This road passes thru waterless desert and even though well-travelled; the area is full of brigands. There is hardly any restaurant on the 700 Km stretch between Mirjava & Quetta and in my time people carried their food & water with them. The other route is further south thru Mand leading to Gwadar & along the Makran coast to Karachi. I have no experience of it but expect it is even more desolate than the northern route.

Except for Kalat & Gawadar, major cities of Baluchistan are located in the northern part so I presume any transmission line has to be along the northern route. Provincial gov’t has been powerless to stop attacks on the buses carrying Shia pilgrims by the LEJ terrorists and / or on the buses carrying Punjabi labours on the Quetta- Sibi highway by the BLA. Can you imagine what the Baluch Nationalists do to the pylons & transmission lines even if it ever comes to pass?

Besides, Iran is still under sanctions and no one has cared to mention where the funds for 700 Km of high tension transmission system inside Pakistan is going to come from?

Personally I believe this is just a propaganda stunt by Iran.

What will balochistan do of that much electricity? their electricity demand isn't that much.

The electricity should be made only limited to Balochistan as this will promote the industrilization of Balochistan as more industry will prefer to transfer to Balochistan
Only the provision of electricity won't improve things there unless security of investors is assured.

do you know how much electricity balochistan consumes?

Also when there is no load shedding in baloch, many industries will open there.

Iran can provide over 10 thousand MW to Pakistan at under 10 cents per kilowatt unit, but I do not think it will happen since the political will for such a project does not exist on Pakistani side. So basically it is just talk.
