Iran tells Saudi: 'We'll leave Iraq when Iraq asks'

Iran's foreign minister said on Wednesday that Tehran had no intention of leaving Iraq and criticised "arrogant" Saudi Arabia for accusing it of stoking sectarian violence.

"We will leave Iraq whenever Iraq asks us to. And we will help Iraq to confront terrorism, as long as Iraq wants us to," Mohammad Javad Zarif said at a press conference in Stockholm during a European tour to attract investors.

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia accused Iran of sowing "sedition and division" in Iraq and sending in Shiite militias, and urged Tehran to "stop intervening" in the affairs of its neighbours.

But Zarif, whose Shiite-dominated country is an arch rival of Saudi Arabia, bristled at the remarks by the Sunni-led kingdom's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

"It's an absurd statement, it's an arrogant statement. Nobody should arrogate themselves to talk on behalf of other countries," he said in English.

Tehran and Riyadh, a traditional ally of Washington, are at odds over a raft of regional issues, notably the conflicts in Syria and Yemen in which they support opposing sides.

Iran has advisors on the ground in Iraq and also in Syria to help the military in both countries battle armed groups fighting the national governments.

Saudi Arabia is also taking part in a US-led coalition targeting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

Without naming names, Zarif warned countries which consider groups such as IS and the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front as "leverages that can be used for political gains".

"That's the worst miscalculation anybody has made in our region," he said.

"I believe the sooner Saudi Arabia comes to understand that ISIS is first and foremost a threat against them, then, anybody else, the sooner we are able to confront this total menace for all of us, not only in the region but in the world," Zarif added, using another acronym for the Islamic State group.

They should quit complaining, half the Arab world along with some others sent their forces to Yemen. Iran offered to Iraq full use of its military against IS yet the Iraqi gov didn't ask for it, all Iran has in Iraq are a handful commanders with the PMF.

dumb thing to say. the saudi will install a saudi freindly government and hey presto bye bye iran. tell the saudis to stopp funding the terrorists in the first place

As long as the Iraqi government and the majority of the Iraqi people are happy with Iranian assistance against ISIS, then the Saudis and other Gulf Arabs have nothing to complain about. :agree:

i wish Iraq luck in finding peace and stability. Terrorism is a common threat to muslims and is like the coming of the Kharijites, a peopl who used to declare anyone kaffir at will. Mullah Umar was one eyed just like Dajjal. The biggest question is if these terrorists have so much beef with the west why have even 5% of attacks not taken place on foreign countries in the west or western troops and contractors within these nations. ISIS/Taliban does not represent a muslim revivalist movement and we should understand this completely. We will need to get rid of all our sympathy for these groups.

Good point lol. Unless the Saudis stop meddling in the affairs of other countries, they shouldn't expect their rivals (e.g. the Iranians) to do that of their own accord.

Honestly, I think they're sometimes pressured by the United States to make these ridiculous anti-Iran statements.

Wherever whenever Iran entered in a country it was base upon direct request of central government of that country whether in Iraq or Syria ,,,, ISIS was 10 KMs away from Baghdad if it wasn't Iran aid the map of region was completely different by what we witness now .... the Q is what Saudis done to help Iraqis in fight against terrorists ....

The problem is they are not sincere in their comments otherwise, they would not speak on behalf of Iraq.

In this case and recently, they are exceeding their masters expectations. Recently Obama told them they need to find a way to share their region with Iran.

The fact is oil is not as valuable as it used to be. Recent climate convention and similar pacts has posed credible limits on each country to cap their green house emission, that will eventually lead to less and less oil consumption. That has put a lot of pressure on KSA economy, on the other hand their venture in Yemen and Syria has caused their foreign reserves to shrink faster than expected. With current trends, their cash reserves will be gone in less than a decade. On the other hand their wrong policies has caused many of their traditional allies to walk away and think twice. In one word, they are loosing their clout. When their reserves run out, they can no longer buy the loyalty of their own people either. At the same time, they have seen Iran gain power against all the odds, establish good relation with West, Russia, India, China, even there are talks about mending the relations with US. What else can they do but nagging?

Every tom dick and Harry these days got their own militias, poodles working for them in forigen lands, forwarding the master interest. When Pakistan does the same to protect its interests in its own neighbour, everyone start to wear their pathetic sectranian glasses, complaining and moaning.
