The U.S. ambassador to Turkey says he hopes Iran is listening to Turkey's encouragement for Iran to enter talks on creating a nuclear program dedicated only to peaceful purposes.

Ambassador Frank Ricciardone , spoke to VOA earlier this week on the sidelines of a U.S.-Turkish relations conference in Washington. He called Turkey Iran's “most stable, prosperous, and advanced neighbor” and said he hopes Iran takes the message seriously. He also said if Iran wants to leave open the possibility that it will use its nuclear program for weapons, the world will stand against that. He said Turkey reinforces that message.

Questioned about press freedom in Turkey, Ricciardone said many journalists feel inhibited because a number of journalists have been jailed, though Ankara insists they are not in detention for their journalistic activities. He said the situation creates a “chilling effect” that could influence what journalists write or say on television.

But the ambassador also praised Turkey, for embracing change in a region where, he said, states usually resist change. He said there is a “new Turkey” that sees the world as full of opportunities rather than enemies.

Turkey was never against Irans nuclear program, It only encouraged iran to site on the table with western nation.

And we did. They told us to cancel the whole shebang or else. That's their negotiation tactic. They want us to give up our right to progress as a nation by force.

We have the technology, the money, the expertise and the resources to produce our own reactors and fuel them. We're also an independent country and we have a right under the NPT to research and enrich uranium. We won't give up one iota of our rights.

Every year we've advanced more and more and they keep pulling back. First they said you can't have a program, we resisted and made enrichment facilities. Than they said you can't have reactors and we made Bushehr. Then they said you can't enrich to 3 percent, we enriched to 20. Now they're saying Iran will be allowed, as if they're the boss of this world, to enrich to 3.5, but not 20 and Iran must stop. The more they order us around and treat us like an enemy, the more we'll push on. Now we're making plutonium reactors and 2 more reactors at the Bushehr site. It's our right and nobody will take away this right from us.

You are all right, In fact Turkey supports Iranian peaceful nuclear program for two main reasons:

1- Turkey plans to develop nuclear power-plants. At long term, Turkey definitely will need to develop an indigenous enrichment plan to provide the required fuel. If Iran has the right to enrich for peaceful purposes why not Turkey! By that time no one could stop Turkey.
2- In mid-term having an option of Iranian fuel will give Turkey a considerable maneuverability in terms of providing cost efficient fuel for the power-plants. No one could put an embargo on sell from west & No one could sell fuel with wrong prices to Turkey.

Why should Iran stop if Nuclear energy can help them saving money and giving more independency over other sources/energies?
