WASHINGTON - A Tehran court on Sunday sentenced an Iranian-American pastor to eight years in prison over his role in underground churches in the Islamic nation, a US group supporting him said. Saeed Abedini, a US citizen who converted to Christianity, was convicted of threatening Iran’s national security over underground church activities a decade ago, according to the American Center for Law and Justice.

The Washington-based conservative legal advocacy group said Abedini and his lawyer were only allowed to attend one day of the trial, which began on January 21. There was no immediate confirmation of the verdict in Tehran. “I am devastated for my husband and my family. We must now pursue every effort, turn every rock, and not stop until Saeed is safely on American soil,” Naghmeh, his wife and mother of their two children, said in a statement. Jordan Sekulow, executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice, said that a revolutionary court judge seen as close to Iran’s clerical leadership handed down the verdict verbally, not in written form as required. Abedini’s supporters said that he led underground churches in the early 2000s when such activity was largely tolerated during the reform-minded presidency of Mohammad Khatami. After he resettled in the United States, Abedini was detained on a return trip to Iran in 2009 and let go following an agreement not to engage in underground religious activities, according to his family. Naghmeh Abedini said that her husband complied with the 2009 agreement and had returned to Iran as part of efforts to build an orphanage.

. . .
So is 50 yrs. How would you like it if the US put every muslims in the US to 8 yrs in prison simply for being muslims? But hey, 8 yrs is better than death, right?

You don't know Muslim law, so please don't talk or compare stuff...
if he was in a different country he would have been sentenced to death...

You are avoiding the question. That is to be expected. If the US put every Muslim-Americans in prison simply for being muslims, would you support your argument: Eight years is better than death?

:hitwall: you kidding me? It is the law for anyone in his situation to be put to death, and he knows the law for sure, so he went on his own risk...
Fine. So we can conclude that in general principle you support harsh punishments for those who are of different religious faiths than that of the majority. Good to know.

Oh okay so according to your views if a Muslim pastor comes to my doorstep to teach me about the insights of Islam do i have the right to gun him down with a Black talon ammunition .44 handgun?

I do not support harsh punishment, but I was comparing if he went to different country such as Saudi "Arabia", he would have been put to death, so he was lucky enough to not be sentenced to death..
does that make sense?
and God won't forget him. he is probably doing what Silas and Paul did when they were in Jail.. that if you know who Silas and Paul are...

what views? and what the heck are you talking about?

How many people from the Islamic world immigrate here? how many have been put to death for practicing their religion or trying to get other members of their community to convert/interfaith sessions? Of course if i go to Saudi Arabia and start handing out bibles i'll get beheaded in a public square in a matter of minutes.

it seems like you have not been to public schools in the U.S? where you (teachers) can't even say Merry Christmas....

Uhh what are you talking about??? We don't force kids to adhere to any religious dogma or deity (unless of course they are going to a private/religious school) Kids can say merry christmas i remember at my high school helping give presents to elementary school kids from our feeder schools.

The minute you take away someone's right to practice whatever faith they choose is the minute that you take away their freedom. Which btw is against the law in this Country.

What does Happy Holidays have to do with Christmas, that public places start saying it instead of Merry Christmas, I have to right to say Merry Christmas, and when there is a law (socially) preventing me from saying Merry Christmas, that is also taking away my simple rights..
