Iran says will sell more arms than buy after embargo lifted

Mon, 2020-10-19 10:31
TEHRAN: Iran on Monday said it is more inclined to sell weapons rather than buy them, after it announced the end of a longstanding UN conventional arms embargo.
Tehran said the ban imposed more than a decade ago was lifted “automatically” as of Sunday, based on the terms of a 2015 landmark nuclear deal with world powers, from which the Islamic republic’s arch-enemy the United States has withdrawn.
“Before being a buyer in the arms market, Iran has the ability to supply” other countries, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters.
The lifting of the embargo allows Iran to buy and sell military equipment including tanks, armored vehicles, combat aircraft, helicopters and heavy artillery.
According to Khatibzadeh, Iran will “act responsibly” and sell weapons to other countries “based on its own calculations.”
The embargo on the sale of arms to Iran was due to start expiring progressively from October 18, under the terms of the UN resolution that enshrined the 2015 nuclear deal.
However, Washington has argued that arms sales to Iran would still violate UN resolutions, and has threatened sanctions on anyone involved is such deals.
President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the nuclear deal and unilaterally begun reimposing economic sanctions on Iran in 2018.
Iran’s defense minister Amir Hatami told state television on Sunday that his country relies primarily on its own military capabilities.
He said that the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s taught Tehran the “importance of self-reliance,” and led it to “produce 90 percent of our defense needs locally.”
Hatami added that “a number of countries” have contacted Iran on potential arms trade.
But he emphasised that “our sales will be much more expansive (than purchases).”

Pompeo warns of sanctions for any arms sales to Iran

Sun, 2020-10-18 17:42
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday said that arms sales to Iran would breach UN resolutions and result in sanctions, after Tehran said the longstanding UN embargo on arms trade with the Islamic republic had expired.
"The United States is prepared to use its domestic authorities to sanction any individual or entity that materially contributes to the supply, sale, or transfer of conventional arms to or from Iran," Pompeo said in a statement.
"Every nation that seeks peace and stability in the Middle East and supports the fight against terrorism should refrain from any arms transactions with Iran."
The embargo on the sale of conventional arms to Iran was due to begin expiring progressively from October 18 under terms of the UN resolution that confirmed the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.
Tehran, which could now purchase weapons from Russia, China and elsewhere, has hailed the expiration as a diplomatic victory over its archenemy the United States, which had tried to maintain an indefinite freeze on arms sales.
President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal in 2018 and has unilaterally begun reimposing sanctions on Iran.
Pompeo said that "for the past 10 years, countries have refrained from selling weapons to Iran under various UN measures. Any country that now challenges this prohibition will be very clearly choosing to fuel conflict and tension over promoting peace and security."

Open season on weapons sales to Iran as UN embargo expires

Sun, 2020-10-18 17:42
CHICAGO: The end on Sunday of a UN embargo on selling conventional weapons to Iran is “a critical threat to regional and international stability,” analysts told Arab News.
The arms ban expired under the terms of the UN resolution that confirmed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 agreement between Tehran and world powers to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions.
Iran can now buy weapons from Russia, China and elsewhere, and Tehran claims the expiry of the embargo is a diplomatic victory over the US.
Nevertheless, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insisted on Sunday that arms sales to Iran would still breach UN resolutions and result in sanctions. “The US is prepared to use its domestic authorities to sanction any individual or entity that materially contributes to the supply, sale, or transfer of conventional arms to or from Iran,” Pompeo said.
“Every nation that seeks peace and stability in the Middle East and supports the fight against terrorism should refrain from any arms transactions with Iran.

The Iranian-American Harvard scholar Dr. Majid Rafizadeh told Arab News: “The lifting of Iran’s arms embargo is a critical threat to regional and international stability. Allowing the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism to have an unlimited supply chain of conventional weapons may sadly go down in history as one of the most dangerous acts against world peace.
“The beneficiaries are the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, its proxies and militia groups across the region. Sophisticated weapons could fall into the hand of the Syrian dictator Bashar Assad and Iran’s terror and militia groups such as the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq.”
Security analyst Dr. Theodore Karasik said Iran primarily sought technical data from other countries in order to build up its domestic arms manufacturing capacity.
“Tehran’s culture of weapons engineering and reverse engineering means possible purchases of small weapons such as the Kornet anti-tank missile from Russia, and components such as Chinese optical jammers against drone attacks,” said Karasik, senior adviser to Gulf State Analytics in Washington, D.C.
“Iran also seeks off-the-shelf systems such as the Russian S-400 air defense and the Bastion coastal defense system. China will benefit too. It is thought that Iran will purchase C-802 anti-ship cruise missiles and possiblyChinese naval patrol craft.”

this proves to me that there is a real need for a renewed contract between Iran and the rest of the world.
i do not trust Iran to sell arms only to countries and groups which would use them for defensive purposes only.

but i'd love to hear *your* opinion about Iran's statements and my own opinion about such statements.

Iran can buy weapons it's clear even under us sanctions but who will buy Iranian weapons under us sanctions? How they can reach the goal?

Syria is under sanctions too, so Syria would stop buying from Russia and buy cheaper better Iranian weapons. Venezuela is under US pressure and regime change with NED coup attempts, they are too cash strapped, and would be smart to buy Iranian weapons over expensive Russian weapons.

Then there are Houthis and other such 'defensive' groups.

Trump is out of office come January next year. Biden lifts sanction on Iran so current sanction on Iran is no big deal.

The good thing about the embargo being lifted is it just showed Iran's patience and respect for the UN to wait it out before (officially) selling weapons to others.

if its really lifted that will be the beginning of more tensions.. I dont think arabs will let you in peace..

this is the perfect opportunity to sell more weapons to the gulfies and if the western world has luck a war will brake out and more can be sold to both sides..

but sure non of them will realize it

so its means iran air force and navy will remain rusty ?

No, today Iran's defence minister confirmed an important deal with Russia regarding airforce. No details were confirmed but according to rumours, the initial deal is for 100 SU-30SM.

As for Iran's navy, in the next 10 years you will see major transformation of it. Many indigenous projects are in the works so Iran needs to invest in those. To give you an idea, a 7000 ton destroyer project is being developed and a large submarine, which at minimum will be of a higher displacement than 3000 tons. In the meantime, the 600 ton Fateh submarine will be produced alongside the frigates such as Sahand etc. So Navy is fine.

India should sell rotary winged and naval platforms along with missiles to Iran

100 Su-30 is overdoing it. IMO 60 is more than enough.

Airforce definitely yes, but Navy, I don't see a dire need immediately. The money needs to go into airforce. We've been waiting for modernising of airforce for too long.

It's a rumour, so the number could be closer to what you're saying. We need to wait for further details.
